On a night that saw multiple World Records bite the dust, Shane Ryan did his part to get Ireland on the Short Course World Championships map. Winning the nation’s first medal here at the Short Course World Championships, Ryan raced his way to bronze in the men’s 50m backstroke final tonight in Hangzhou.

The former Penn State University standout put his pieces in place yesterday with lifetime best swims in both the prelims and the semi-finals of the sprint back event. He first crushed a new Irish National Record in 23.03 in the morning before dipping below the 23-second threshold for the first time ever in 22.96 to make the final.

This evening, the 24-year-old fired off a 22.76 stunner to claim the bronze medal just .18 behind Russia’s gold medalist Evgeny Rylov (22.58) and .13 behind USA’s silver medalist Ryan Murphy (22.63).

This is a year of firsts for Ryan, who already became the first Irishman under 49 seconds in the men’s LCM 100 freestyle. He’ll take on that event in short course meters here tomorrow morning.
