SMU Picks up Verbal from Summer Juniors Qualifier Rob McCall

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Rob McCall of Nashville, TN has verbally committed to swim for the SMU Mustangs beginning in the fall of 2021. He swims year-round at Ensworth Aquatics and he is a senior at Ensworth High School. He swims club and high school under the direction of Head Coach Christian Bahr and Assistant Coach Joe Goeken.

McCall comes from a family of former swimmers. Both of his parents, Glenn and Claire Sanders McCall swam at the University of Texas. As a Longhorn, Glenn was a finalist at the 1984 Olympic Trials. He also swam in multiple finals at the NCAA Championships in the 200 back throughout his college career.

I am excited and honored to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at SMU for the next four years! I want to give a special thanks to my coaches Christian Bahr and Joe Goeken for believing in me throughout my journey. I also want to thank my family, my friends, and my teammates for the constant support, encouragement, and motivation you all have given me. Pony up!

McCall earned 2019 Junior National qualifying times in 3 events at the 2020 SE Holiday Classic in December of 2020. He swam the 50 and 100 free, 100 fly, 100 and 200 back. He finished 3rd in the 50 and 100 free, and he won the 100 fly and both back events. He met the 2019 Summer Junior Nationals qualifying time standard in the 100 and 200 back and the 2019 Winter Junior Nationals time standard in the 100 fly.

Additionally, his 200 back time of 1:46.53 was 13 seconds faster than what he had been going 2 years earlier in December.

In February of 2020, McCall competed at the 2020 TISCA Tennessee High School State Championship. The Ensworth High School junior swam the 100 fly and the 100 back and he toom part in 200 of his team’s relays. He made it back in the A-final in both of his individual events, touching 8th in the 100 fly and 2nd in the 100 back. In finals, he moved up to 7th in the 100 fly (51.36) and he earned the silver medal in the 100 back (50.65).

Ensworth High School’s 400 free relay finished 3rd. McCall anchored the relay in a 100 free time of 46.95. Noah Lucy, Jake Mason, and Patrick France swam the first 3 legs of the relay. The same four men swam the 200 medley relay which finished fourth. McCall led off on backstroke in a time of 24.06. France swam breast, Mason swam fly, and Lucy anchored on free.

Top SCY Times:

  • 100 back – 49.36
  • 200 back – 1:46.53
  • 100 fly – 49.50
  • 50 free – 21.58
  • 100 free – 46.71
  • 200 free – 1:43.53

The Mustangs will welcome McCall on campus in the fall of 2021. He will make an immediate impact in the backstroke group. His 200 back time would have made him the team’s 4th fastest competitor during the 2019-2020 season, with only 0.61 seconds separating him from top swimmer Matan Segal.

Southern Methodist University finished third at the 2020 American Athletic Conference Champs. McCall would have earned a spot in the A-final in the 200 back and the B-final of the 100 back and 100 fly.

SMU has been successful this season with its recruiting. The men’s team has already received verbals from Sawyer Inglis, Ryan Stevenson, Russell Exum, Pierce Thionville, Max Zuanich, Joe Rusnock, Cotton Fields, and Angus Corbeau for its class of 2025.

Wow, SMU is on a roll. With such a great coaching staff and facility, and a great class, they’re no doubt one of the most quickly improving teams in the country.

It would seem as if SMU actually is running away from TCU, based on the quality of recruits committing to each school.
