National Junior Teamer Kate Sanderson Commits to South Carolina

After originally sending a verbal commitment to University of Wisconsin, National Junior Team member Kate Sanderson has announced her decision to swim for the University of South Carolina in 2018-19. Sanderson was selected to the 2017-18 National Junior Team for her performance in the 1500 free at 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals, where she touched third in 16:33.48.

“I am so excited to announce my commitment to the University of South Carolina. I am excited to be apart of such a special program and an amazing school. I would like to thank my family, friends, teammates and my coach Mike Doane for his endless support. Go Cocks!!”

Sanderson is a senior at Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs. She had quite a breakthrough junior year, dropping 54 seconds in her short-course mile and 37 seconds in her long-course mile. Most of her best SCY performances came out of 2017 Western Zone Sectionals in Lewisville: she won the 500 free and 1650 free, and took 13th in the 200 back.

This summer she won the 400 free and 1500 free at Colorado Swimming Long Course State Championships, and came in 4th in the 400 IM, then went on to place third in the 1500 at Juniors.

Her top SCY times are:

  • 1650 free – 16:20.34
  • 1000 free – 10:17.86
  • 500 free – 4:50.66
  • 200 free – 1:54.53
  • 200 back – 2:02.24

Sanderson will join Abbey Ellis, Anna DelGado, Clare McGovern, Ellie Masterson, Emma Scheider, Haley Arner, Halladay Kinsey, Kaelyn Dougherty‏, Mari Kraus, Rachel Lee, and Ryann Styer in the South Carolina class of 2022.
