2017 FINA WORLD SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Hungarian Kristof Milak nailed the World Junior Record in the 100 fly for the third time in two days, taking down the mark yet again with a 50.62 and a silver medal at tonight’s finals of the 2017 World Championships.

Milak paced his swims perfectly, first setting the mark with a 51.23 Friday morning to qualify 5th, then going 50.77 to qualify 3rd in last night’s semis, before tonight’s silver medal performance that put him ahead of last year’s Olympic gold medalist, Joseph Schooling.  The 17 year-old Hungarian has been one of the breakout stars of this week, and also owns the World Junior Record in the 200 fly, which he set back in June at the European Junior Championships.

Notably, at the age of 17, Milak is over a second faster than the current world record holder, Michael Phelps, was as a junior.  Phelps’ best time as a 17 year-old was a 51.84 at the 2003 Duel in the Pool and his fastest time as an 18 year-old was a 51.10 from the 2003 World Championships.

Tonight’s swim moves Milak up to the 8th fastest performer ever in the 100 fly, and Caeleb Dressel moved up #2 all-time as he rattled Phelps’ world record.

Fastest Performers Ever
1 Michael Phelps 49.82
2 Caeleb Dressel 49.86
3 Milorad Cavic 49.95
4 Joseph Schooling 50.39
5 Ian Crocker 50.4
6 Rafael Munoz 50.41
7 Chad Le Clos 50.56
8 Kristof Milak 50.62
9 Albert Subirats 50.65
10 James Guy 50.67

It will be interesting to see if he considers training in the US after this year. With Sergio Lopez?
