While competing on night 2 finals of the FINA World Cup stop in Beijing, national champion Michael Andrew tied the American Record in the men’s short course meters 50 breaststroke.
En route to silver behind Russia’s Kirill Prigoda, who took gold in 26.02, 19-year-old Race Pace Club swimmer Andrew busted out a new personal best of 26.15 at the famed Water Cube. That mark matches the time Cody Miller threw down at the 2016 FINA World Championships as the American Record, giving Andrew his 2nd national mark.
The swim came after Andrew took silver earlier in the session in the men’s 50m back, clocking 23.14.
The LCM 50 breaststroke is one of four national titles Andrew claimed at the 2018 U.S. National Championships. He won gold in the 100m breast, 50m fly and 50m free as well in Irvine. He holds the LCM U.S. Open Record in the 50m breast with the 26.84 he registered at that meet.
We live near the Andrews and train USRPT. We just competed in a meet and my swimmers all strokes and distances and swam awesome. I chuckle when people say “well, it works for some people!”
MA tied the American record in the 50 SCM Breaststroke and you’re still not sure he’s legit? What does he need a DNA test. MA is for real and I don’t think he’s going away.
USRPT doesn’t work tho
I wonder if he’d be any better if he swam for NC State or Cal?
Everyone acts like USRPT made Michael Andrew.
Maybe he’s just a stud, and he’s making USRPT.
How much better do you think he could be at this point? He’s the fastest 19 year old in several events.
That’s impossible to say. He’s had the same coach his whole career so we may never know if he would ( would’ve) benefited from different more traditional training. The reason why many have wondered is because of his past struggle with endurance. He would swim an amazing 50 free then get last in his heat in the same day. This has not happened with any other elite swimmer at a national championship level meet that I can think of. When you’re one of the best in the world… which he clearly is, and you’re tapered for a big meet… you’re ready for the whole weekend. If we’re talking about all 4 strokes, he’s the greatest sprinter in the history of US swimming. Change my mind.
How many international swimming medals does he have? 1?
@Maverick If you want a serious answer to your question, you’ll have to ask it more specifically. Pan Pacs are an international meet. As are World Cups. He has lots and lots of World Cup medals. But surely you have some way-more-specific definition that fits your definition of MA as not being a world-class swimmer.
I think Caeleb Dressel is at least tied with Michael Andrew. But, both are still amazing.
Going with my silliest argument- he’s still almost a full second slower than Lochte in the 100 IM, the sprintiest 4 stroke event there is.
All underwaters. MAs getting better at those, but not near what Lochte was at his prime.
This is true. He has more of an Im workout than heavy freestyle since he does less yardage at higher speeds.
