We begin Summer Junior Nationals with heats of the 200 fly and 100 breast. This afternoon we will have the slower heats of the girls’ 800 free and the boys’ 1500 free; the fastest distance heats by seed will swim in the finals session tonight.

Crow Canyon’s Bailey Hartman opened the circle-seeded heats with 2:11.33 to win by nearly 2 seconds, with Lilly Derivaux (2:13.26) and King Aquatic Club’s Camden Doane (2:15.60) in her wake.

Lilly’s sister, Audrey Derivaux from Jersey Wahoos, dropped .7 to win heat 8 with 2:11.54, edging Club Wolverine’s Hannah Bellard (2:11.71) and notching the fastest-ever time for a 13-year-old. Mansfield Aquatic Club’s Katie Walker (2:12.42) came in third, while Palo Alto Stanford’s Kelsey Zhang went 2:13.59 for fourth.

Tess Howley of Long Island Aquatic club dropped half a second in the last heat to break the meet record of 2:09.02 from 2019 by going 2:07.56. Howley moves up to #5 in the 17-18 age group with that swim. Behind her were Caroline Bricker of Pikes Peak (2:11.92) and Lainey Mullins of Suburban Seahawks (2:12.58).

Logan Robinson from Greater Pensacola kicked off the circle-seeded heats with a PB of 2:00.10, dropping nearly six-tenths and notching a 2024 Olympic Trials cut. Club Wolverine’s Tyler Ray (2:00.51) and Adriano Arioti of Rockville Montgomery (2:01.68) followed.

Carmel Swim Club’s Gregg Enoch went out like a rocket in heat 15. He led by half a body length at the 100 and by .9 at the 150. During the last 50 meters, Evolution Racing’s David Schmitt, one lane to his left, put it into another gear and chased Enoch home. They both reached the wall at exactly 1:59.23, tying for the heat win. It was Enoch’s first time under 2:00; he dropped 1.3 seconds and punched his ticket to 2024 Trials.

Aaron Shackell, also from Carmel, won the final heat with 1:57.37. While 1.5 seconds off his seed time, he still won by two body lengths ahead of Diego Nosack of Tualalin Hills (2:00.70) and Michael Hochwalt of Spokane Waves (2:01.21).

In the final heat before the circle-seeds, Avery Collins from Lakeside Aquatic Club took 1.3 seconds off her seed time to win by a body with 1:10.60. Crow Canyon’s Raya Mellott followed with 1:08.26 in the next heat, dropping half a second to come to the wall 2.6 seconds ahead of Hannah Marinovich from Clovis Swim Club (1:10.87). Elle Scott from NOVA of Virginia, was disqualified in that heat.

Mary Elizabeth Cespedes from Valparaiso Swim Club took the penultimate heat in 1:08.87, improving her entry time by .7. Behind her by about a body length were Irvine Novaquatics’ Kaitlyn Nguyen (1:10.41) and Edina Swim Club’s Cate Pawlaski (1:10.46). Pawlaski dropped .8 with her swim.

Top-seeded Piper Enge of Bellevue Club shaved .3 off her seed time to win the last heat in 1:08.09, slipping by Mellott to post the fastest time of the morning. Mason Manta Rays’ Addie Robillard (1:09.77) and DART’s Sarah Bennetts (1:10.96) were 2nd and 3rd in the heat.

Boys’ 100 Meter Breaststroke – Prelims

The most impressive swim of the morning came in heat 19 of 22, when 14-year-old Ian Call from Memphis Thunder dropped a massive 1:02.64 to win the heat. He took 1.1 seconds off his personal best and Reece Whitley’s 13-14 National Age Group record (1:03.23) that had stood for 9 years. Call obliterated that mark by a margin .59 to rise to the top of the age group all-time. Hurricane Swimming’s Giulian Martin dropped nearly 1.1 seconds and came in 2nd from lane 1 with 1:02.81.

Charlie Egeland from Aquajets was the heat winner in the first of the circles, going 1:01.74 to beat Raleigh Swim Association’s Brasen Walker (1:02.03).

Ridgefield Aquatic Club’s Xavier Ruiz (1:01.42) improved his entry time by 1 second to touch out Texas Ford Aquatics’ Joshua Chen (1:01.64) and Metroplex Aquatics’ Watson Nguyen (1:01.70).

Nick Mahabir from Team Elite Coronado was the final heat winner in 1:01.00. He broke 1:00 last week in the same pool at U.S. Pro Championships, lowering his own Singaporean national record. Phoenix Swimming’s Alexei Avakov (1:01.71) and Rose Bowl’s Daniel Lee (1:01.90) finished 2nd and 3rd in the heat.

Seeded with a yards time (9:47.64), Mila Nikanorov from Highlands Ranch dropped 15.5 seconds from her LCM personal best to win heat 2 of the 800 free with 8:44.20, notching the only Olympic Trials cut of the morning. Bailey Hartman dropped over 15 seconds in her heat. Other notable swims include Paige Downey (-5.7), Clarke Neace (-7.1), Ava Sutphin (-6.3), Sydney Wilson (-5.8), Ava Topolewski (-6.1), Claire Stuhlmacher (-6.3), and Teagan O’Dell, who dropped nearly a minute (she hadn’t swum the event since 2019).

It was a great afternoon of racing in the 1500 free. Lukas Vetkoetter of Texas Ford kicked us off with an Olympic Trials cut of 15:39.29 in heat 2, dropping 27.2 seconds for a massive PB. The last heat of the afternoon punched four more tickets to Indy in 2024, as Jacob Pins of Des Moines Swim Federation (15:31.13, PBx16.3), Aiden Hammer from King Aquatic Club (15:33.69, PBx15.5), Saadeddin Saadeddin from Scarlet Aquatics (15:37.28, PBx8.1), and Bucky Gettys from Texas Gold Swimming (15:37.44, PBx6.2) all came in under the standard.

Other big drops included those from Trey Hesser (-18.6), Conner Boatright (-13.2), Jiarui Xue (-10.8), Jones Lambert (-19), Will Siegel (-16.2), Quinn Jones (-19.2), Dillon Brigman (-13.9), and Charlie Franz (-20.2).
