Women’s 200 IM – Finals
World Record: 2:06.12 – Katinka Hosszu, HUN (2015)Canadian Record: 2:06.56 – Summer McIntosh, (2024)- World Aquatics ‘A’ Cut: 2:12.83
- Canadian Secondary World Champs Standard: 2:14.16
- Canadian World Juniors Standard: 2:17.58
Summer McIntosh continued to make waves at the Canadian Trials, shattering the world record in the 200 IM as she blasted into the wall in 2:05.70.
McIntosh’s race knocked .42 off of the previous standard of 2:06.12, set by Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu back in 2015, and marked the first sub-2:06 performance in history in the event. McIntosh notably won gold in this event at the Olympics in Paris, where she set the former Canadian record with a personal best time of 2:05.56; her swim tonight took nearly a second off of her lifetime best.
Split Comparison
Summer McIntosh – 2025 Canadian Trials (World Record) | Summer McIntosh – 2024 Olympic Games (Previous Canadian Record) | Katinka Hosszu – 2015 World Championships (Previous World Record) | |
Fly | 27.19 | 26.80 | 27.30 |
Back | 30.80 | 31.80 | 31.64 |
Breast | 37.79 | 37.53 | 36.70 |
Free | 29.95 | 30.43 | 30.48 |
Total Time | 2:05.70 | 2:06.56 | 2:06.12 |
McIntosh delivered a showstopping race tonight. She split 57.99 on the opening 100 to be .95 ahead of the world record pace at the halfway mark, only to fall off the a bit on the breaststroke leg. McIntosh trailed Hosszu’s world record pace by .14 heading into the final 50 before racing home in 29.95 to shatter the old record.
This marks McIntosh’s second world record of the meet so far; she broke the 400 free world record on day one, obliterating the previous standard set by Ariarne Titmus by over a second (3:54.18). McIntosh also set a new Canadian record in the 800 free on day two, lowering her own standard by almost five seconds (8:05.07).
McIntosh is currently entered in three more events as the meet continues, so we could see even more impressive swims from her over the next few days.
finally- totally expected this. She will get down to 2:04 in her career
Amazing. Will she able to hold this form? It’s tough to double-peak over 6 weeks. Or maybe this isn’t even her peak…..scary thought.
Don’t want to get ahead of anything but heavens if she breaks the 200 fly record I may puke. The shock waves she is sending to my mortal soul is insane.
Currently the best swimmer at the moment, male or female.
Yeah I don’t think there’s any real argument to that, especially with Leon kind of laying low right now.
Full power Leon or full power Summer would be a ROUSING debate though.
no its still easily summer leon is only gold chance in 4 events and i think paris purposly sabotged qin with the drug testd do he woildnt perform well in the 2 breast and leon could get gold in it
Or Leon was the better swimmer?
Nah, I think Leon just had a home field advantage in Paris and did a fabulous job of using it.
I don’t think it’s even close. She swam the 800 free for funzies and came within a second of Ledecky’s WR. No one else not named Ledecky has been within 7 seconds of that time, and it might be her…fifth best event?
While Summer has broken world records in 3 LCM events (7 times in total) and 3 SCM events,
Marchand has broken only world record in 1 LCM event (only one time) and 1 SCM event.
Summer fifth best event (800 free) is second fastest performer ever (very close to breaking WR)
I don’t know what Marchand fifth best event is, but he’s certainly not the second fastest performer in that event, let alone anywhere near WR.
In my opinion, until Marchand break WR in two more events, it’s still easily Summer, full power or not.
In addition, in her 6th best event, 200 free, Summer is easily the third fastest active swimmer, just behind the juggernaut 1:52 twins of Titmus and MOC.
What’s Marchand’s sixth best event?
Easily.
I wonder how much this meet’s results are impacting her decision to go to Bowman – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it
This results are coming after she made a change already and it seems like that was always intended as a stop gap to Bowman given the rumors for about a year.
I wouldn’t overthink it
It’s a done deal. But she now knows that if things do not work as well as foreseen in Austin, she has a very good fallback plan. Drawback is a lack of college/university in Antibes (there is one in Nice) Pretty much depends on the subject she would like to study.
Or she could just go to college once she’s done swimming.
I thought she wasn’t planning on taking any classes? Just pure swimming
she’s planning on doing school
My understanding is “no class the first year”.
Just goes to show you how aerobic training can improve your overall swimming, especially closing speed. Something a few U.S. coaches could learn and incorporate in their programs.
I agree but it’s kinda ironic you’re pointing this out when you’re a UVA fan and Todd is notorious for being sprint forward and for making Alex Walsh stop the 400 IM and training for it after Blaire left
Where did you see it said that Todd made Alex stop swimming the 4IM? I’ve only seen Alex talk about not liking the event and that being why she stopped pursuing it. Curzan has also spoken of the aerobic free she’s done at UVA as being super helpful for her – so UVA clearly does aerobic work.
Even GW has talked about the aerobic work she’s done in recent years (1:39 2free, 1:48 2 back, 1:52IM at a non-champs meet). Jack Aikins has the #1 200 back in the world right now. Curzan has gone from sprinter to a 200-back specialist. This trope is tired.
Not ironic at all. Pretty straight-forward, in fact. BTW, not that I claim any credit for it, but the AW interview just posted on SS sort of validates my point.
Why are y’all so hellbent on Alex swimming the 400 IM when she has made it crystal clear that she doesn’t want to? The best she can ever hope for in an ideal scenario in that event is a silver medal at Worlds, the Olympics, or any meet Summer McIntosh attends, so if the outcome is going to be the same in the 200 IM, wouldn’t you want to avoid the absolute pain cave of training for the 400?
Sorry if I missed this but is Summer planning a 7 individual event schedule in Singapore??
Only 5 – 2/4 IM, 4 free, 2 fly and one of either 800, 2 free or 2 back
Summer confirmed last week in an interview that she is planning to swim 5 individual events.
The Goat..will she cruise the 4im in prelims, and go for the 2back? Then scratch the 2bk in finals..I think she could hit a 2.04. If she swims it.
