Candidates will be expected to lead their squads within the BLUE WAVE philosophy, foster a true TEAM environment, and work as a TEAM of coaches to help BLUE WAVE and each and every swimmer reach their potential in and out of the water.

New season begins Aug 28th and the hope would be to have someone join as soon as possible from that point.

Duties will include but not limited to:

  • Overseeing BWST’s age-group program, planning and conducting swim practices in accordance with the BLUE WAVE philosophy.
  • Supervising and mentoring assistant coaches.
  • Attending scheduled USA swim meets, as well as assist with BWST hosted meets, eventually as Meet Director.
  • Conduct 20-25 hours of on deck coaching per week and 15-20 hours of administrative work during which time office hours will be maintained.
  • Communicating with parents
  • Participating in staff projects, planning & supporting team activities.

Ideal applicant has:

  • 5+ years of coaching experience preferably at the club level.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and personal experience in competitive swimming.
  • Demonstrates both strong communication (orally and in writing) and administrative and organizational skills.
  • Experience with swimmers of all ages, interest in teaching at every level, and willingness to learn, experiment, and evolve
  • Working knowledge of Team Unify systems and Hy-Tek systems required along with proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
  • Current certifications including CPR, First Aid, and Coaches Safety Training
  • Must pass a background check from USA Swimming and have completed the USA Swimming Coaching requirements.

DCS is seeking an individual with experience training Senior Sectional qualifiers to novice Age Group swimmers for a full-time position as Head Coach. Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years experience as a head or an assistant coach; they should understand the individual training needs of swimmers and be well versed in athlete development and stroke technique.  He/she should be an excellent communicator and motivator for swimmers of all levels. Candidate must be ASCA Level 3 certified at a minimum. College level experience as a swimmer is a plus.

The Head Coach will be prompt, dependable and mature. He/she will be responsible for the well being and safety of all team members, for organizing team schedules and swim meets, providing leadership and mentoring to assistant coaches, communicating with parents, writing and conducting daily practices, designing an appropriate training strategy, goal setting with all swimmers, attending swim meets, attending educational swim clinics and seminars, growing the team and group roster, being a positive role model to team members and a “swim team ambassador” within the community. Head Coach will be energetic, driven and passionate. He/she must be willing to create an atmosphere in which swimmers can thrive. He/she must desire to build on an established program with professionalism, integrity, and confidence. Knowledge of TeamUnify and Team Manager is preferred but not required.

The Assistant Head Men’s Swimming Coach reports to the Head Men’s Swimming Coach and assists the Head Coach in the coaching and training of the Men’s Swim Team.

Specific Responsibilities:

Coaching

  • Assist the head coach in the coaching and training of Northwestern’s Men’s Swimming team; developing and conducting all in-season and out-of-season sessions throughout the year as deemed necessary and appropriate.
  • Aid the head coach in the psychological preparation of team in both pre-game and post-game; and for developing motivational approach to practice and meets.
  • Develop comprehensive knowledge of swimming in decision-making, delegating authority and in setting objectives.

Administrative

  • Must be fully knowledgeable and adhere to all rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten Conference (as applicable) and Northwestern University as amended from time to time.

Recruiting

  • Assist the head coach in the recruitment of top student-athletes, commensurate with the admissions qualifications of Northwestern University who are capable of successfully competing at the NCAA level.  Maintain good relations with the parents of prospective and current student-athletes.

Student Affairs

  • Demonstrate interest in academic progress of student-athletes.  Work closely with Academic Services in solving and preventing academic problems.
  • Cooperate with team physicians and Sports Medicine staff regarding health care and decisions of practice and participation of student-athletes.
  • Support and encourage student-athlete participation in community service and other outreach activities.

Alumni Relations, Public Relations and Development

  • Responsible for the maintenance of sound alumni relations and for promoting and participating in various alumni events in cooperation with the Athletic Development staff.
  • Assist the Athletic Development staff in fund-raising efforts on behalf of the swimming program and department as requested.
  • Responsible for maintaining good public relations with the public news media, and working with the Department’s Athletic Communications department in promoting Northwestern University.  Maintain amicable public relations with faculty, staff, students and media of the University; friends as well as alumni support groups and secondary school coaches.

Other

  • Report issues and concerns to the Sport Administrator and faithfully and diligently carry out other Department related duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all sports in the Intercollegiate and Recreational programs.
  • Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.
