DIRECTOR OF COMPETITIVE SWIMMING – COUNTRYSIDE TORPEDOES 

The Director of Competitive Swimming will lead a highly organized parent Booster organization which supports the Mission, Vision and Values of the Countryside YMCA. This individual must demonstrate personal leadership ability, commitment to youth development through swimming, and the necessary skills to achieve maximum success for the competitive swimming program and its participants.

This is a full-time, onsite position with access to the Countryside YMCA benefits package.  Position involves weekend or extended hours and travel to offsite events.

EDUCATION AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 

  • Must have a proven record of success in competitive swim team development and program management.
  • Minimum 25 years of age
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Five years prior experience as the Head Coach of a competitive swimming program including managing and developing two (2) or more assistant coaches
  • Ability to obtain a USA Swimming membership
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
  • Creates a positive, team oriented atmosphere where swimmers learn the core values of the YMCA.
  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Attends booster meetings and takes charge on any issues that may affect swimmers or coaches.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs coaches and volunteers as needed.  Reviews and evaluates coach performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Oversees, supports and communicates with the coaching staff. Provides educational opportunities where possible.
  • Develops and implements an appropriate training program, practice schedule and meet schedule for the swimmers directly coached. Ensures that programs and schedules are appropriate for the age and skill level of participants.
  • Meets with swimmers and / or parents to discuss goals and progress, and to ensure that any concerns are addressed.
  • Develops and monitors program budgets to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Responds to member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs.
  • Is knowledgeable of daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  • Collaborates within the YMCA Aquatic Dept. to properly schedule pool facilities for all competitive swimming activities.
  • Coordinates all contracts for outside competitive swimming programs that utilize Countryside YMCA facilities.
  • Follows injury/accident reporting procedures; notifies appropriate staff of any unsafe conditions, needed repairs, complaints, accidents, or injuries immediately.
  • Participates in Director level YMCA job requirements such as facility tours, late night duties and Key Staff initiatives.
  • Recruits new swimmers through professional and community contacts as well as through the local summer clubs.
  • Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Requirements within 30 days of hire include: completion of Countryside YMCA onboarding course (Changing Lives), training requirements as issued through Praesidium, completion of YMCA program-specific and trainer certifications.
  • YMCA Lifeguard certification; CPR; First Aid; AED; Blood-borne Pathogens.
  • YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving; YMCA Swim Coach Certification
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Team Unify, Google and Meet Management software preferred.
  • Must have strong organizational and conflict resolution skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of stroke technique and the Countryside YMCA Torpedoes common terminology.
  • Knowledge of the swimmer aerobic development process.
  • Ability to set near and long-term club goals and motivate team members.
  • Experience in working with athletes of all ages.
  • Able to relate and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to stand, kneel, bend, stoop, reach overhead; maintain the strength and agility required to supervise and demonstrate program activities
  • The position requires proficient swimming ability and the proper application of rescue and first aid techniques.
  • Must have the ability to lift various materials up to 25 lbs occasionally and the ability to properly extract individuals from the pool(s) to the deck as needed in rescues.
  • The employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; observe and possibly interpret people and situations; analyze and solve problems.
  • May interact with members and participants who are distressed or dissatisfied.
  • Exposure to pools, wet and very humid conditions, and chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment can vary from quiet to loud depending upon the programming that is occurring at the time.
