Over the course of the last week, we witnessed some incredible racing at the 2022 Australian Swimming Championships. Some of these swims include Ariarne Titmus breaking Katie Ledecky’s world record in the women’s 400 free, Zac Stubblety-Cook becoming the first man under 2:06 in the men’s 200 breast, Kaylee McKeown‘s four individual wins, the prowess of Australian women’s sprint freestyle, and more.

That was perfect technique for 400 Free. It looks so smooth and balanced. She is economical but fast in the turns as well. It reminds me of Thorpe’s body position and kick but she isn’t 6’7″ of course. I reckon her turns are better than his. In th past I thought the 400 record was going to be tougher to break than the 200 record so I am surprised to see this go first but I think Titmus is the ultimate 400 freestyler. She is fantastic at 200 and I expect her to break that record soon but the 400 should be her event as long as she wants it. I can see her taking it to 3:55 one day.
I think she’ll break 200 WR in Commonwealth
Thorpe didn’t even streamline properly and yet he was really good off the walls. His streamline was sloppy like an age grouper (tbf he was basically still an age grouper).
His effectiveness off the turns were actually a model for young Phelps, who of course turned it up to 11 like he did with everything.
Ian Thorpe isn’t 6’ 7” either
