Swiss Aquatics has released its eight-swimmer roster for the 2023 World Aquatics Championships composed of two women and six men. At the 2022 championships in Budapest, the team had seven members: three women and four men.

Leading the way for the Swiss are 2021 Olympic bronze medalists Noe Ponti and Jeremy Desplanches. Ponti won his medal in the 100 fly, touching in a national record time of 50.76 behind the likes of Caeleb Dressel and Kristof Milak. Desplanches’ bronze came in the 200 IM, where China’s Wang Shun won gold and Great Britain’s Duncan Scott finished runner-up.

Ponti will be tackling all of the butterfly events this summer. At the 2023 Swiss Long Course Championships, he swept the three events. During the 100 fly heats, he achieved a time of 51.52, ranking third in the world (he now is in 11th with a 51.28 from the Mare Nostrum Swim Tour). His 200 fly time, 1:55.39  from last weekend’s Sette Colli Trophy, also has him in 11th in the world rankings.

Desplanches is entered in the 100 breast and 200 IM, both of which he is the Swiss National Record holder. At the Swiss LC Championships, he finished first in both events touching in 1:02.06 and 2:03.29. He also touched first in the 200 breast but will not contest that in Fukuoka.

Like Ponti at the 2023 Swiss Long Course Championships, Lisa Mamie swept her chosen discipline, breaststroke. The 2022 European champion in the 200 breast (2:23.27) will contest all three distances in Fukuoka. At the 2022 World Championships, she dropped the 100 in favor of only swimming the 200; she finished in 10th with a time of 2:25.56.

Joining these three are Antonio Djakovic, the 2022 European silver medalist in both the 200 free (1:45.60) and 400 free (3:43.93), and Roman Mityukov, Marius Toscan, and Nils Liess. Besides Mamie, the only other female swimmer is Nina Kost, who will swim the 50s and 100s of free and back.

Contesting the open water events in Fukuoka for the Swiss will be Christian Schreiber.
