Aussies Hitting SC World Championships Qualifying Times Through Day 2

2022 AUSTRALIAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2022 Australian Short Course Championships represents one of the qualification meets Australian swimmers can race at to make the Short Course World Championships team.

This year’s SC Championships are being hosted by Australia, set to take place in Melbourne from December 13th to December 18th.

Per Swimming Australia’s selection criteria linked above, the qualifying competitions for its swimmers include the following:

  • 2022 Sydney Sprints (inclusive of Australian Short Course Championships and State Teams)
  • 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Championships

Swimming Australia is sticking to the FINA ‘A’ cuts as its minimum time qualifications as opposed to devising its own list of time requirements. This was outlined in our post from earlier this year, which you can find here.

Additional Australians wrote their names onto the consideration roster for this year’s Short Course World Championships on night two of the Australian National Short Course Championships.

Among them was two-time Olympic champion Kaylee McKeown who scored the 5th fastest 200m backstroke time in history to add the event to the 100m back victory she took last night.

Madi Wilson was another athlete who etched a second event onto her list of qualified swims, as the Marion ace took silver in the 100m free to add to her 200m free race from night one.

Kyle Chalmers earned a new All Comers Record in the 100m free to stake his claim on his second freestyle event for Melbourne.

Ok, so doing some number crunching: with only 32 athletes in total (16 men, 16 women) it’s tight.

By my calculations, these women should be safe as they finished first, or finished second and are needed so we can field a relay team:
McKeon, Wilson, Pallister, McKeown, Hodges, Strauch, Perkins, Dekkers, Hardy, MOC, Harris, Neale

That’s 12 spots. If 2 were to go to JPP swimmers, perhaps Jansen & Perkins? Jansen could get some heat relay experience on a senior team, and Perkins could swim the 800 (we didn’t qualify a second swimmer – the short course qualifying time is 8:29:17 and she swam an 8:30:44 long course).

So the final 2 spots a choice between: Atherton, Mikayla Smith,… Read more »

Perkins and Southam the only juniors selected.

By expanding the team, they selected everyone eligible!

When I saw the selection criteria I thought the team size limit was small for a home championships and wasn’t able to confirm what FINA’s limit was to see if SA were lowering it themselves. I guess this confirms that they were.

A bit surprising that Emma scratched the 100 fly.

That is strange. Presumably she will be offered the spot anyway since Perkins was the only one to hit the A cut and Emma’s long course time is faster than the short course A cut.

That will depend on the final times which is yet to be swam.

Team size may mean that Castelluzzo doesn’t get selected.

It’s either 24 or 28 from this meet, plus 4 juniors from Pan Pacs.

Four juniors from JPPs? Seems like only Southam should be picked.

Well if she was gambling that two wouldn’t get under the QT she lost the bet so both spots are filled now.

I’m not sure what the official procedures are but I’m assuming she doesn’t care. She’s the fastest LCM and SCM 100 fly on the team in the past year so if they can they’ll slot her in.

She’ll get the relay spots anyway.

The add up for the top 4 in the women’s 100 free is only 0.3 off the 4×100 free WR without adjusting for relay changeovers.

Missing lots: Woodward and Hartwell were both under the QT in the 200m back too.
