2022 Canadian Trials: Day 2 Prelims Live Recap

2022 CANADIAN SWIMMING TRIALS

WEDNESDAY PRELIMS HEAT SHEET

This morning’s prelims will be a short session, featuring the 50 back and 100 fly, along with the para 50 back, 400 free, and 200 free. There will also be timed finals of the women’s 1500 free and men’s 800 free, which begin at the end of this session. The fastest heat of the women’s 1500 and men’s 800 will be swum with finals.

We’ll see World Champion and Olympic Champion Maggie MacNeil make her debut this morning. MacNeil is the top seed in the women’s 100 fly, coming in with her Canadian Record mark of 55.59. It’s worth noting that if the events weren’t back-to-back, MacNeil might have tried her hand at the 50 back today as well. This past December, MacNeil broke the World Record in the women’s SCM 50 backstroke at the SC World Championships.

We’ll also see the debut of Canadian Record holder Josh Liendo in the men’s 100 fly. Liendo holds the top seed in the event by over a second. Finlay Knox, who broke Canadian Record in the 200 IM last night, is seeded 2nd, so we’ll see (most likely tonight) if he has more career best performances in him this week.

WOMEN’S 50 BACK PARA – PRELIMS

TOP 8 QUALIFIERS:

  1. Niki Ens (LASER), SB2 – 1:11.48
  2. Aly Van Wyck-Smart (VVAC), SB2 – 1:15.65
  3. Jordan Tucker (GMAC) – SB4 – 1:09.68
  4. EXH – Clemence Pare (SAMAK), SB5 – 1:02.44

Niki Ens led the way this morning, swimming a 1:11.48 to better her seed time by 3 seconds. Reminder: para swimming results don’t go by time, there is a point system that ranks the swim based on proximity to the World Record in each swimmer’s class.

MEN’S 50 BACK PARA – PRELIMS

TOP 8 QUALIFIERS:

WOMEN’S 50 BACK – PRELIMS

  • World Record – 26.98, Xiang Liu, 2018
  • Canadian Record – 27.52, Kylie Masse, 2022
  • FINA ‘A’ Standard – 28.22

TOP 8 QUALIFIERS:

  1. Kylie Masse (TSC) – 27.65
  2. Ingrid Wilm (CASC) – 28.04
  3. Kayla Sanchez (AAC) – 28.21
  4. Mary-Sophie Harvey (CAMO) – 28.30
  5. Regan Rathwell (GO) – 28.72
  6. Eloise Allen (CHIN) – 29.39
  7. Katie Schroeder (LOSC) – 29.45
  8. Rosie Zavaros (MAC) – 29.49

Kylie Masse led the field comfortably this morning after posting a decisive win in the 100 back last night. Masse’s 27.65 this morning comes in just off her season best of 27.52, which she swam last month. Ingrid Wilm, who finished 3rd in the 100 back last night, clocked a 28.04 to put her firmly in 2nd this morning.

In her debut at this meet, Kayla Sanchez made it into tonight’s final, swimming a 28.21, just 0.08 seconds off her seed time. Mary-Sophie Harvey has made her presence felt perhaps more than anyone up to this point of the meet. Harvey qualified for the World Champs team in the 200 IM last night, then went on to finish 4th in the 100 back, the next event. After qualifying for this final, Harvey has now qualified for the super final in 3 of the 5 women’s events that have been competed to this point.

MEN’S 50 BACK – PRELIMS

  • World Record – 23.80, Kliment Kolesnikov, 2021
  • Canadian Record – 25.13, Acevedo/Wood, 2017
  • FINA ‘A’ Standard – 25.17

TOP 8 QUALIFIERS:

  1. Evangelos Makrygiannis (UN-CA) – 25.48
  2. Kacper Stokowski (NCS) – 25.84
  3. Tayden de Pol (UBCT) – 26.50
  4. Loic Courville Fortin (CAMO) – 26.55
  5. Arthur Millet (UL) – 26.58
  6. Tristan Jankovics (WCW) – 26.81
  7. Edouard Fullum-Huot (PCSC) – 26.86

Greek national Evangelos Makrygiannis blew away the final heat this morning, tearing to a 25.48. Polish swimmer Kacper Stowkowski was 2nd this morning with a 25.84. Notably, as foreign swimmers, Makrygiannis and Stokowski will be relegated to the ‘B’ final tonight.

The absence of Markus Thormeyer and Cole Pratt continues to be felt in the men’s backstroke events. the FINA ‘A’ cut in the event sits at 25.17, a mark which no Canadian swimmer was anywhere near this morning.

WOMEN’S 100 FLY – PRELIMS

  • World Record – 55.48, Sarah Sjostrom, 2016
  • Canadian Record – 55.59, Maggie MacNeil, 2021
  • FINA ‘A’ Standard – 58.33

TOP 8 QUALIFIERS:

  1. Katerine Savard (CAMO) – 57.86

  7. Ashley McMillan (GO) – 1:00.39
  8. Mabel Zavaros (MAC) – 1:00.63

Katerine Savard tied her seed time of 57.86, leading the field this morning by nearly a full second. Savard was the fastest swimmer in the field this morning on both 50s, splitting 27.01 on the opening 50, then coming home in 31.37.

Olympic and World Champ Maggie MacNeil was 2nd this morning, swimming a very relaxed looking 58.78. MacNeil didn’t appear to be giving her full effort on the race this morning, so we’ll see how much faster she can go tonight.

Penny Oleksiak was entered in the final heat, but swam the first 50 then got out. We’re unclear on whether that was intentional, or if something happen to cause her to exit the race early.

  • Canadian Record – 51.40, Josh Liendo, 2021

Uh oh, Penny stopped after the first 50 of the 100 fly. She was looking great…hoping it was planned?

It was planned according to Devin Heroux (Twitter).

What was her split ?

Something about a declared false start, not sure she was definitely leading at the 50 though

What was her split? If it was 25 high or close to that then must have been planned to crank a 50 to see how it feels and ‘get into the meet’. While it would be great from fan perspective to see her tackle the 100 again, it may not fit into a lineup with 100/200 free plus up to 5 relays. But the 50 fly, which she is 🇨🇦 record holder, might fit…

I can’t remember her split, but she definitely had a full stroke on Maggie at the point.

Ah ok. Her 🇨🇦 rec is 25.6 I think. So again with no extra time trials allowed at the meet she was just testing her speed, maybe putting up a 50 fly ‘time’ for consideration as an add on event for the summer.

Great job to Kathryn Hazle last night! 4:15 in the 400 is great!
