I certainly hope Katie Ledecky avoids session doubles in the future. The women’s 200 meter/1500 meter freestyle double/double (heats/final) is the definition of insanity.

The following swimming program avoids session doubles at the Summer Olympics and the World Championships:

Women’s 400 meter freestyle
Women’s 800 meter freestyle
Women’s 1500 meter freestyle
Women’s 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay

Swimming the double did not hurt Ledecky since she won the 1500, but it would help the Americans to develop 2 swimmers who could beat Ledecky in the 200 at the Trials.

It was a noble but fruitless effort since Katie Ledecky did not medal in the women’s 200 meter freestyle at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. In the future, I would hope that common sense prevails since Katie Ledecky will be 25 years old at the next major international tournament (2022 FINA World Aquatics Championships).

Greatest Female Swimmer of All Time, now with more individual golds than anyone not names Michael Phelps. Some think she had a “disappointing” Games, but she still won 2 gold and 2 silver, and her 2 winning times were still faster than any other woman has ever been, despite adding 8 and 17 seconds in those events. She has shattered the glass ceiling in distance swimming.

Certainly she would never have a goat sequinned on to her swimmers .

I don’t know how anyone could call 2 individual golds disappointing. That’s more than 99% of competitive swimmers achieve in a lifetime

add a few 9s to the end there…

I thought Ledecky did great. That 400 was at least a second faster than I expected from her. And she swam it the only way she had a chance to defeat Titmus…fast pace and forcing a late rally. Great job. The 200 was logical. I posted prior to the event that Ledecky would almost certainly have one race well below expectation. It was only a disappointing Games for Ledecky if you bought into the absurd notion that her 2019 World Championship performance was entirely due to sickness instead of what it was, a natural decline for a female distance swimmer after exiting her teens.

She’s 24 years old. There is no “natural decline.” She’s in the prime of her life. Her coaches failed to come up with training plan to help her. I comment on this above.

The women’s 200 meter/1500 meter freestyle double/double (heats/final) was brutal. Thankfully, Katie Ledecky finished with the gold medal in the women’s 1500 meter freestyle.

Really hoping she goes back to her old coach now that she’s done with stanford. Even better if he was still allowed to coach her when she was there!

I agree. Maybe it was just the stress of completing a four year degree at Stanford, while going pro, and while training for the Olympics, but it’s clear that her coaches did not find a way to help her get better. She is so far ahead in the 800 and 1500 freestyles, that she could bring her B game and still win by a healthy margin. That won’t be the case three years from now. If she wants to win gold in the 400, 800, 1500, and challenge for a medal in the 200, she needs to make some changes in her training program. If Stanford can’t or won’t provide that, she should find someone who will.

i mean she went her second fastest time ever in the 400 and split 1:53 in the 8 free relay, I’d say she was pretty good
