After some stunningly fast swimming through the three stops of the 2025 World Aquatics World Cup, where we saw 13 World Records, 30 World Cup Records and 23 Continental Records, we have some serious shake ups of the SCM top-10 rankings.
We saw some NCAA stars drop some big times, with Josh Liendo, Ilya Kharun and Hubert Kos all dropping top-five swims all-time, but there was also some thunder from Down Under as five World Records were set by Australian Women on their North American tour.
With some swimmers throwing down rested swims in short course meters for the first time in their senior careers, who has risen up to be among the very best in the world?
The Risers
The biggest overall riser who ended up in at least one top ten was Irish swimmer Ellen Walshe, who dropped 5.80 seconds in the 200 fly to go 2:02.36 That was her third Irish record in the event in two weeks and vaulted her from outside the top 200 to sit 8th all-time. She also now ranks in the same position (8th) in the 400 IM, having sliced 3.5 seconds off her best to rise from 24th and give her an increase of 231 places in total.
Josh Liendo was biggest riser for the men, cracking the top-10 in the 50 free, 50 fly, 100 free, and 100 fly. He moved up a total of 140 places compared his rankings prior to the start of the tour.
Hubert Kos sits close behind thanks to his monster 124-place jump in the 100 IM, where he knocked off a stunning 2.26 seconds to become the 6th-fastest performer in history by the end of the series. He is in the top ten in three events: the 100 IM, 100 back, and 200 back, and is just outside in the 50 back (#12)
Shaine Casas‘ star turn in the 400 IM, where he now ranks 3rd all-time having never logged a SCM prior before he swam in Carmel, knocks LCM World Record holder Leon Marchand out of the top ten.
Mollie O’Callaghan, having not logged a SCM 200 freestyle before October this year (she did split 1:52.83 on the Australian 4×200 free relay at SC Worlds in 2022), now sits nearly a second ahead of anyone else in history, and moved up to 8th all-time in the 100 free too.
Regan Smith is the only swimmer to set a best time and move down the rankings as she undercut her former World Record twice, knocking 0.17 seconds off in total, but saw long-time rival Kaylee McKeown beat her on both occasions as she took the record.
Smith does own the third-most top-10 rankings of any active swimmer for the women, matching Liendo’s mark of four. In fact, she makes the top three in the 50 back, 100 back, 200 back, and 200 fly. Kate Douglass joins Gretchen Walsh and Katinka Hosszu as the swimmers with the most top-10 rankings overall with seven in total.
Caspar Corbeau missed the top ten in the men’s 50 breast by a single hundredth, but now ranks 11th, 5th and 1st in history in the 50/100/200 breast. He had previously not even been in the top 25 in the stroke and claimed Dutch records at all three distances, including breaking the hallowed 2:00 barrier in the 200. That sees every men’s pool swimming World Record now have an average pace under a minute per 100m.

Regan went best times in her 3 events. If she had gone a best time in 50 back, probably would have moved up the standings a bit with a new WR
Marchand could be top 10 (with a taper) in
100,200,400im
200,400 free
200 back
200 fly
100, 200breast
Shaine has shown that Léon was a one time 4 shot o champion but no longer the favorite for LA
That would mean top 10 in all 5 200 events. Has that ever happeened before ?
Crazy that Leon is not in the top 10 for the 400IM. I bet he will destroy the WR if he is fully rested for it. Probably a 3:52 or lower
The women 100 fly margin is otherworldly
It reminds me of Ledecky 800 and 1500 during 2014-2016
Yeah and I think Gretchen broke that world record at last year world champs in heat, semi final and final.
I think “number of top ten rankings of active swimmers” stat is a bit askew. It says R Smith has the second most, but W2 and KD are tied for 1st, and then Sjostrom has 5. R Smith and McKeown would be tied for 4th with 4 each.
Actually Sjostrom has 6 now that I look again
scm starting to get quite a few WR’s that look as strong as their lcm counterparts
Not quite. But it’s getting much better than just a few years ago.
It’s hard to get the SCM records to their LCM counterparts cuz none of the superstars will align their trainings to be 100 percent at a SCM meet unlike an LCM championship meet. It would take swimmers with skill sets aligned for SCM (like Gretchen Walsh) to get the records to be as strong but those are rare
Harder to break women 100 fly or 100 free scm?
It’s insane that Hackett (2002) and Thorpe (2003) 400 free are still in the top 10. The next oldest among the men are from rubber suits 2009.
The oldest among women are from rubber suits 2008.
Ian Thorpe’s 3:41.83 400 free (in briefs no less) as the fastest 16 yo boys record may never be broken in my lifetime.
While Phelps is the GOAT, it’s arguable that Thorpe and Mary T were the furtherest ahead of their time
Furthest. But I agree. Mary T would still finish 3rd or 4th in major finals with her now 44 year old 2.05.96 200 fly time. And Thorpe’s 2002 400 time would have won just about every 400 final since.
Agreed
“bitter rival Kaylee McKeown”
You may want to check dictionary and thesaurus what “bitter rival” means.
Examples of bitter rivals:
🔵 Thomas Edison vs Nikola Tesla.
When Edison died, Tesla wrote, in the New York Times, “He had no hobby, cared for no sort of amusement of any kind and lived in utter disregard of the most elementary rules of hygiene.” That’s cold.
🔵 Aaron Burr vs. Alexander Hamilton: A political and personal rivalry that ended in a deadly duel.
I don’t think Kaylee McKeown and Regan Smith want to kill each other.
Anyways, your wording makes it sound Kaylee is bitter.
Why would Kaylee be bitter?
It makes no sense and is baseless.
Bitter rival means a hated rival. And clearly Regan and Kaylee don’t hate each other. Same as Martina and Chrissie – amazing rivalry but they were actually good friends.
Or Federer and Nadal, who are fierce rivals on tennis courts but are actually longtime friends.
