On Friday, Iowa hosted Minnesota in its annual Blackout dual meet at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The Gophers won 13 of 16 events en route to a 190-109 victory over the Hawkeyes.

The Hawkeyes’ most recent win in the series was in 2011, when Iowa won 205-95. The series now stands at 27-6 in favor of the Gophers.

“The women did a great job with their preparation and energy and I’m proud of our team competing well on the road against a Big Ten opponent!” said Minnesota head women’s swimming coach Stacy Busack in the university’s press release. “I’m looking forward to continuing the season with a contest at home next week!”

Iowa head coach Nathan Mundt also released a statement, saying, “We had some excellent performances this afternoon against a top-25 Big Ten opponent. Minnesota has been an excellent program for a long time. It was great to see our team come together and make progress today. We are still in the early part of our season. We had a great team effort along with some individual efforts.

“All in all, we kept fighting and, even though the score was a little short of what we would like, we came together strong and finished well. We are proud of the progress we are making.”

The Gophers kicked the day off with a wire-to-wire win in the 200 medley relay as the quartet of Ava Yablonski (25.43), Ava Goodno (28.55), Morgan Thomas (23.80), and Livi Wanner (23.16) touched the wall in 1:40.94, with Iowa settling for second at 1:42.38 and Minnesota’s ‘B’ squad a second behind them at 1:43.38.

Minnesota’s relay win gave the distance freestylers some instant momentum, as the junior duo of Jade Roghair (10:04.07) and Anja Kalijevic (10:14.26) swam to a 1-2 finish in the 1000 free, with Iowa’s Olivia Frantum rounding out the top three with a time of 10:23.34.

Roghair’s time was a new personal best, bettering the 10:05.86 she produced at the Purdue–Iowa–Minnesota–Northwestern Quad Meet last February. The times from Kalijevic and Frantum both checked in as new season bests.

Roghair returned to the pool to win the 500 free, clocking a season-best 4:53.53 to once again out-duel teammate Kaljevic (4:56.39), while Kayla Barr made it a Gopher sweep with her 5:01.24 for third.

After her strong 23.80 fly split, Thomas took to the pool for the 100 free, where she led from start to finish en route to clocking the only sub-51 time of 50.79. She was 1.47 seconds off her season-best 49.32 from last month, but it was still enough to get the job done over the Iowa duo of Jenna Kerr (51.25) and Rachel Dildine (51.47).

Junior Katie McCarthy was the Gophers’ other double individual-event winner, as she took the 200 free (1:49.96) and 200 IM (2:01.65) events.

In the 200 free, McCarthy trailed Iowa sophomore Nora Kemp by a full second at the halfway mark, 53.45 to 54.44, but powered home with 27.93/27.61 splits over the final two 50s to secure the win by just over six-tenths. Minnesota sophomore Paige Moreen notched a lifetime best of 1:53.29 to take third place.

The 200 IM was also closely contested, with McCarthy in lockstep with Hawkeye junior Olivia Swalley after the butterfly, holding a slim lead at 26.81 to 27.02. Swalley outsplit her on backstroke by just under a second to lead at the 100 by 0.76. On breaststroke, Swalley extended her advantage with a split more than a second faster than McCarthy’s, giving her a 1.76-second lead heading into freestyle. McCarthy scorched a 26.84 free split to run down Swalley, who closed in 28.74, touching first by just 0.14 seconds, 2:01.65 to 2:01.79.

Swalley’s time marked a new season best, while McCarthy’s was just shy of her 1:58.44 from last month’s Georgia Tech dual meet.

That wasn’t the only close contest Swalley found herself in that day, as the 200 fly delivered another nail-biter. Gopher sophomore Rachel Conley surged ahead early, opening in 27.11 to Swalley’s 27.78, and both held steady with mid-30 splits on the second 50. Swalley began closing the gap on the third lap, out-splitting Conley by three-tenths to pull within four-tenths at the final turn, then chipped away another two-tenths on the last length. Conley held on for the narrow win, 2:00.88 to 2:01.21.

In backstroke action, Minnesota showed out, sweeping the top three spots in the 100 and securing a 1-2 punch in the 200. Sophomore Kamdyn Periat blasted out to an early lead, turning at the halfway point at 26.36, nearly a full second ahead of the rest of the field, and held on to win at 55.05. Freshman Finnly Jollands (55.76) closed the gap a bit over the final 50, but was still seven tenths behind for a safe second place finish. Junior Elise Jacobs touched the wall with a time of 56.67 to complete the Gophers’ sweep.

Both Periat and Jollands were a half second shy of their season bests from last month, while Jacobs’ swim represented her first time swimming the event this season.

The 200 saw Jacobs claim victory in 2:00.26, crushing the field by more than three seconds, while senior teammate Faith Johnson (2:03.67) out-touched Iowa junior Hope Schimming (2:03.68) by one hundredth at the finish for second.

Jacobs’ mark slid under her season-best 2:00.46 from last month’s tri-meet with Nebraska and South Dakota.

Iowa secured three wins on the day, and Swalley accounted for one of them, taking the 200 breaststroke. She stopped the clock at season-best 2:17.86, coming from behind at the halfway point to out-touch Minnesota freshman Keira Mullins (2:18.32) and sophomore teammate Emilie Mosner (2:18.44). Mullins took a win of her own in the 100 breast, leading from start to finish to win in 1:03.60 to Mosner’s 1:03.99, with Gopher freshman Emma Fellman (1:04.74) rounding out the top three.

Freshman Payton Flowers collected the other two of the Hawkeyes three individual wins, both placing her in Iowa’s top 10. In the 50 free, Flowers swam 23.02 to move to ninth in school history. During the 100 butterfly, she swam 54.20 to appear eighth in the program record books. Her best times in those events remain 22.54 and 53.71, both set during her senior season of high school swimming.

Flowers dominated both races from the start, touching ahead of Kaljevic (23.44) and Dildine (23.51) in the 50 free. In the 100 fly, Minnesota’s Yablonski (55.52) and Kaljevic (55.90) each clocked sub-56 times to take the second and third spots.

The Gophers’ foursome of Wanner, Kaljevic, Yablonski, and Thomas ended the day with a decisive win in the 200 free relay, hitting the wall with a time of 1:32.58. The Hawkeyes touched second in 1:33.48, while Minnesota ‘B’ finished with a time of 1:35.50.

While splits are unavailable for all legs of the relay, Wanner’s lead-off split of 22.98 was faster than Flowers’ winning time of 23.02 in the individual event. Wanner focused on relay duties at the meet, but did swim the 200 free where she finished sixth with a time of 1:54.85. Her best time in the 50 remains the 22.09 she set at last season’s Big Ten Championships, while her lifetime best in the 200 free stands at 1:47.08 from that same meet.
