For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Georgia high school state finalist Sam Fields has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at the U.S. Air Force Academy beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on Instagram, writing:

I am super excited and honored to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the United States Air Force Academy. First, I would like to thank my parents and family for always believing in me throughout this process. Next I would like to thank Coach Pat, Coach Rick, and Coach Tyler for helping develop my passion for the sport. Also, Coach Jordan and all my teammates at Swim Atlanta Midway. Lastly I would like to thank Coach Clayton and Coach Finch at USAFA for giving me this amazing opportunity! ⚡GO FALCONS⚡

A rising senior at Walton High School in Georgia, Fields has been a member of the school’s varsity swimming team for the past three years. He currently trains year-round with SwimAtlanta, where he primarily specializes in backstroke, freestyle, and IM.

Fields is coming off a 2025-26 short course season that saw him drop about eight seconds in the 200 IM, three seconds in the 200 back, two seconds in the 100 and 200 free, and a second in the 50 free and 100 back.

Fields’ current personal bests were set at various meets throughout the season: he clocked 49.77/1:47.95 in the 100/200 backat the Georgia Senior State Championships in December, 21.16 in the 50 free at the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) 6A State Championships in February, 1:50.90 in the 200 IM at the GA SA Best of the South meet in early March, and 46.65/1:41.83 in the 100/200 free at the Greater Atlanta Divisionals at the end of March.

An ‘A’ finalist each year of his high school career, Fields turned in his best performance yet at the GHSA 6A State Championships this past season, finishing fifth in the 100 back and seventh in the 200 IM, while helping the 200 free relay take fourth and the 200 medley relay fifth.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 Freestyle: 21.16
  • 100 Freestyle: 46.65
  • 200 Freestyle: 1:41.83
  • 100 Backstroke: 49.77
  • 200 Backstroke: 1:47.95
  • 200 IM: 1:50.90

A Division I program, Air Force competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), with the men’s team beating out UNLV by 50 points to win the team title this past season. At the meet, Fields’ current career bests would have qualified for the ‘B’ final in the 200 IM, 100 back, and 200 back, the ‘C’ final in the 100 free and 200 free, and would have needed a 20.88 in the 50 free to reach the ‘C’ final there as well, setting him up as an immediate contributor with two full seasons of training still ahead before his first conference meet.

Fields joins Drew Hopkins and Charlie Wang in committing to Air Force’s class of 2031 so far.
