Texas freshman Will Modglin became the 2nd fastest freshman in history as he won the ‘B’ final of the 100 backstroke at men’s NCAAs in a 44.20. Modglin previously stood as the tied for #2 all-time with Destin Lasco at a 44.49. He now sits alone behind Jonny Marshall of Florida who swam a 44.86 in the A final of the event tonight at NCAAs.
TOP 5 FRESHMAN 100 BACKSTROKE TIMES
- Jonny Marshall, Florida – 44.12
- Will Modglin, Texas – 44.20
- Destin Lasco, Cal – 44.49
- Ryan Murphy, Cal – 44.63
- Ruard van Renen, Southern Illinois – 44.67
Marshall swam the fastest 100 back time for a freshman ever with a 44.12 at SECs last month. Modglin just missed making the A final of the 100 back as he swam a 44.58 in prelims for 9th place while Marshall was 8th in a 44.52 during prelims.
Modglin’s time from finals would have been 5th if he had been in the ‘A’ final, just ahead of Lasco who is now a senior at Cal. Later in finals, Modglin led the Texas 400 medley relay off in a 44.32.
Modglin also set a new school record for the Longhorns as the previous record was a 44.35 that John Shebat swam at 2017 NCAAs. Modglin arrived at Texas this fall with a best time of a 45.01 in the 100 back. He was the only swimmer for Texas to make the final of the event.
Modglin will look to make the A final of the 200 back tomorrow as he is the #8 seed coming into the event.
Get this man some sour candy
The B-Final sometimes feels under-appreciated. Even more when it’s one like this impressive Will Modglin B-Final ‘win’. I keep thinking it might be nice to give some sort of extra recognition for that B-Final ‘victory’. Maybe award “All American” status to NINE swimmers, including the ‘winner’ of the B-Final, and let that swimmer stand with the other eight and get a trophy. Particularly since ‘9th’ almost always has a faster time than a couple of A-finalists. It would add more juice to the B-Final race. On the other hand, it might muddy the water about the times and finish order of 1 through 8. I’m sure I have not considered other factors too, but usually I just stop thinking about… Read more »
Will is a good kid. Happy for his success. TX has several talented underclassmen that are well rounded people out of the pool too. They may be down a bit but they will be back I have a feeling.
Many have tried after that Shebat record, cool to see it fell today.
Fastest US freshman ever
Jonny Marshall is from the US. He is also an American. He doesn’t even have a British accent.
but represents UK internationally?
From his Florida bio he’s a dual American/UK citizen and is on the UK national team.
Someone probably answered this before with Caspar Corbeau but can a dual citizen who’s represented another country set an American record?
No. Must be eligible to represent the US.
Sure going to be a fun next 3 years watching those two and others raise the bar …
Holy crap you’re right!
