Meilutyte one one-hundredth of a second away from Euro Record

After having a spectacular day of racing yesterday, where she broke the European record in the 50 breaststroke winning the event in a time of 29.96, Ruta Meilutyte followed it up by narrowly missing the European record in the 100 breaststroke, which she set last weekend in Monaco. Meilutyte took the race out in a time of 30.59, 74 one-hundredths of a second ahead of Rikke Moeller Pedersen, and won the race in a time of 1:05.21 one one-hundredth of a second slower then her own European record.

Moeller Pedersen finished second in a season’s best of 1:06.20 followed by Kanako Watanbe who finished third in a time of 1:08.65.

Women’s 50 backstroke

Aya Terakawa faced off against Mercedes Peris Minguet in the finals of the 50 backstroke once again, this time the race was much, much closer than the showdown in Monaco. In Monaco Terakawa won the event in a time of 27.53 with Peris Minguet finishing second in a time of 28.04, in Barcelona there was only two one-hundredths of a second separating the two women with Terakawa once taking the event in a time of 28.06 with Peris Minguet finishing second in a time of 28.08.Terakawa_Aya

Marce Duane da Rocha finished third in a time of 28.59.

Men’s 50 breaststroke

Olympic 100 breaststroke champion Cameron Van der Burgh took the 50 breaststroke in a time of 27.59 finishing ahead of Damir Dugonjic who posted a time of 27.69. Dugonjic won the event in Monaco in a new meet record time of 27.49.

Felipe Lima finished third in a time of 27.93.

Women’s 50 butterfly

Jeanette Ottesen Gray won the 50 butterfly recording a time of 26.11, which is 42 one-hundedths of a second slower than her winning time of 25.69 posted in Monaco. Ingvild Snildal finished second in a season’s best 26.47 while Daynara de Paula finished third in a time of 26.74.

Men’s 400 IM

Once again Daiya Seto destroyed the competition in the men’s 400 IM by eight seconds taking the event in a time of 4:12.71. Seto’s time was just a bit faster than the 4:13.09 that he posted in Monaco.

The race for second was a good one. Going into the breaststroke Semen Makovich had a three second lead on Makym Shemberev who closed the gap in the breaststroke, the two battled in the freestyle with Shemberev finishing second in a time of 4:20.42 followed by Semen Makovich who recorded a time of 4:20.85 to finish second.

Women’s 100 freestyle

In Monaco Britta Steffen and Sarah Sjostrom went one, two in the 100 freestyle with Steffen winning the event in a time of 54.05 followed by Sjostrom who posted a 54.15, in Barcelona the results were flipped. Sjostrom won the event in a time of 53.92, five one-hundredths of a second off of Libby Trickett’s meet record, followed by Steffen who touched in a time of 54.49.

Pernille Blume finished third in a time of 55.01.

Men’s 100 backstroke

Gareth Kean took the event in a time of 54.70 followed by Aschwin Wideboer Faber who recorded a time of 54.96. Vitaly Borisov, who won the event in Monaco in a time of 55.52, finished third in a time of 55.10.

Men’s 50 freestyle

Roland Schoeman won the men’s 50 freestyle in a time of 22.18 followed by Sinri Shioura who posted a time of 22.54, four tenths of a second slower than the time he recorded in Monaco. Hamser Garcia Hernandez finished third in a time of 22.60.Schoeman_Roland

Women’s 200 backstroke

In Monaco Daryna Zevina won the 200 backstroke in a seaon’s best of 2:09.05, in Barcelona she won the event in a time of 2:09.59, but in a very different fashion. In Monaco Zevina took the race out in a time of 1:04.36 leading the race from start to finish, in Barcelona she turned at the 100 mark in a time of 1:05.25 which put her in sixth place, over a second behind leader Sinead Russell. Zevina had a blazing second half posting a time of 1:04.07 overtaking the five women ahead of her.

Marce Duane da Rocha finished second in a time of 2:11.41 followed by Russell who recorded a time of 2:11.54 for third.

Men’s 200 breaststroke

Viatcheslav Sinkevich took the men’s 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:10.36, 31 one-hundredths of a second faster then his winning time in Monaco. Marco Koch finished second posting a time of 2:11.26 followed by Melquiades Alvarez Caraballo who recorded a time of 2:11.85.

Women’s 200 butterfly

Mireia Belmonte Garcia won the women’s 200 butterfly in a time of 2:08.88 followed by Judit Ignacio Sorribes who posted a time of 2:10.20. Martina Van Berkel finished third in a time of 2:11.65.

Men’s 100 butterfly

Steffen Deibler, who currently has the fastest 100 butterfly of 51.19 done this season, won the event in a time of 52.52. Deibler finished second in this event in Monaco where he posted a time of 52.72 being beat out by Chad le Clos who recorded a time of 52.11.SteffenDeibler

Nikolay Skvortsov finished second in a time of 53.03 followed by Nikita Konovalov who touched in a time of 53.36.

Women’s 200 IM

Miho Teramura won the women’s 200 IM in a time season’s best of 2:12.17. Katinka Hosszu, who had an extremely quiet day, finished second in a time of 2;12.85 followed by Victoria Andreeva who finished third in a time of 2:13.39.

Men’s 200 freestyle

Yuki Kobori in a time of 1:48.50 followed by Yannick Lebherz who posted a time of 1:48.93 with Matthew Stanley finishing third in a time of 1:49.50.

Women’s 400 freestyle

In the final event of this leg of the Mare Nostrum tour Mieria Belmonte Garcia collected her second winning of a gruelling evening taking the women’s 400 freestyle in a time of 4:05.99. Belmonte Garcia won the 200 butterfly early in the evening. Lauren Boyle finished second in a time of 4:07.75 followed by Melanie Costa Schmid who recorded a time of 4:08.83.

Yes, Garcia’s strong performance didn’t go unnoticed. One additional remark about Women’s 400m free final. Both Mireia Belmonte Garcia and Lauren Boyle posted a time of 4:05.xx at their own National Championships in March. Now, probably unrested and soon after 200 butterfly final, Garcia did it again but Boyle acquiesced in 4:07. That was a strong performance from Garcia.

By the way, as Swimvortex wrote, Meilutyte posted her times without rest. A cluster of performances of over 950 FINA points without rest is a remarkable accomplishment.

Meilutyte is not going to participate in the last meeting of Mare Nostrum series this weekend. This in turn means Terakawa seems to have a comfortable lead by 57 FINA points before Hosszu… Read more »
