Tennessee Picks Up “Best of the Rest” Breaststroker Hannah Marinovich (2024)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Hannah Marinovich has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Tennessee, beginning in the fall of 2024.

Marinovich is currently a junior at Clovis West High School, and trains year-round with Clovis Swim Club in Fresno, California.

“I am so overjoyed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic careers at the University of Tennessee! I am so thankful for my family, coaches, and friends for the endless amounts of support! GO VOLS #ladyvol”

Marinovich was featured in the “Best of the Rest” breaststroke category on SwimSwam’s “Way Too Early Recruit Ranks” for the class of 2024. She is a pure breaststroker and, at age 14, was one of the youngest athletes competing at Wave II of the 2020 Olympic Trials. She qualified at age 13 in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:29.15, which also is the fastest-ever time done by an American 13-year old in the event.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 breast – 29.82
  • 100 breast – 1:02.99
  • 200 breast – 2:13.77

Top LCM Times:

  • 50 breast – 32.44
  • 100 breast – 1:10.14
  • 200 breast – 2:29.15

Although Marinovich has struggled to hit her 200m breaststroke time from 2020, her 100 breaststroke in both short course and long course has improved this past year. This summer, she competed at Speedo Summer Junior Nationals where she placed 11th overall in the 100m breaststroke (1:10.14). Her time broke her previous best set in 2020 by over a second. She also time trialed the 50m breaststroke at that meet, where she went another best time of 32.44.

Last December at Speedo Sectionals, she clocked best times in the 100 breast (1:02.99) and 200 IM (2:10.19), as well as a season best in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.89). Her 100 breast was a personal best by just over a tenth, and it earned her 3rd place overall. Marinovich has already set a best time this month in the 200 IM (2:10.10), shaving off a few hundredths from her swim last December.

Marinovich is currently outside of the SEC scoring range for the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Last season, it took a 1:01.54 to advance to the C-final in the 100 and 2:13.36 to advance in the 200. Breaststroke was neither a huge strength or huge weakness last season for the Vols at SECs, as they scored 58 and 63 points in the 100 and 200, respectively. Mona McSharry led the way in both events last season, winning the 100 at SECs with a 57.50 and placing 3rd in the 200 with a 2:07.29. Alexis Yager was the next best performer for the Vols, finishing 5th in the 200 at SECs (2:08.42). Neither will be on campus when Marinovich arrives.

For next fall, the Vols have signed a very breaststroke heavy class. Emilie Fast, from Sweden, holds best LCM times of 1:06.64 and 2:28.38 in the 100 and 200 breast. Fast is also joined by Tori Brostowitz (1:00.91/2:14.23) and Molly Blanchard (1:02.46/2:13.26), who are both within the SEC scoring range for at least one breaststroke event. With the addition of Marinovich, the Vols look to be building a deep breaststroke group for the upcoming years.

Marinovich joins sprinters Josie Connelly and Jillian Crooks, IMer Emily Brown, and freestyler Ella Jansen. Brown was featured as the #19-ranked recruit on SwimSwam’s “Way Too Early Recruit Ranks” for the highschool class of 2024, while Connelly was also featured in the “Best of the Rest” section. Crooks and Jansen are both international athletes, as Jansen is a member of the Canadian National Junior Team, while Crooks represented the Cayman Islands at the 2020 Olympics.
