Rebecca Smith Slices .09 Off Own 200 Freestyle Canadian Record

The Canadian women’s 4x200m freestyle relay wasn’t able to repeat their gold medal-winning performance from last year, but the nation did land on the podium tonight in silver.

The combination of Rebecca Smith, Katerine Savard, Mary-Sophie Harvey and Taylor Ruck collectively clocked a time of 7:34.47 to finish behind Australia and ahead of the United States. Australia notched a new World Record in 7:30.87 while the U.S. rounded out the top 3 in 7:34.70.

En route to the relay’s runner-up status, Canada’s lead-off Smith produced a new national record in the 200m freestyle.

Smith scored a 1:52.15 opener, a time that overtook her own previous Canadian standard of 1:52.24 produced in Abu Dhabi. That previous PB rendered Smith the silver medalist last year in the individual 200m free event.

With just .09 separating her old and new Canadian Records, Smith split nearly identically to her race from one year ago.

Smith checks in as the 16th fastest performer in history worldwide and the 4th fastest woman from the North American continent in this women’s 200m free event.

This marks Smith’s second personal best in as many days as the 22-year-old notched a new career-quickest time of 52.68 leading off Canada’s bronze medal-worthy 4x100m free relay last night.
