Matthew Whelan Wins Pair of Events on Day 2 of NCAP Invite

Day 2 of the NCAP Invite saw NOVA’s Matthew Whelan win a pair of events. Whelan, who competes collegiately for Duke, first took the men’s 100 fly in 54.74. His time blew away his previous best of 55.41, which he had set back in 2017. Whelan also went on to win the men’s 50 free, touching in 23.56, which is just off his PB of 23.43.

14-Year-Old NCAP teammates Erin Gemmell and Camille Spink each won an event on the day. Gemmell took the women’s 200 free, clocking a 2:03.51. Her time was within a second of her season best of 2:02.63. Spink took the women’s 50 free, obliterating her lifetime best in the process. Spink came into the meet with a 27.11 mark in the 50. In finals, she sped to a 25.97, launching her to 10th all-time for 13-14s.

UVA’s Cooper Wozencraft won the men’s 200 free, touching in 1:53.96. Wozencraft took nearly 7 seconds off his personal best of 2:00.78, which he had set back in 2013 as a 14-year-old. NCAP’s Georgia Johsnon won the women’s 100 breast, setting a new best time in the process. Johnson swam a 1:10.88, knocking well over half a second off her previous best of 1:11.59. UVA’s Casey Storch claimed victory in the men’s 100 breast, swimming a 1:06.38. Storch’s personal best of 1:04.10 is from 2017.

UVA’s Emma Seiberlich won the women’s 200 back, swimming a 2:12.18 to win the event by 3 seconds. NCAP’s Sean Conway took the men’s 200 back in 2:05.60, a season best by 3-tenths of a second.
