Olympic bronze medalist Kylie Masse got her 2017 Trials off with a bang on Thursday morning, smashing the 100 back Canadian Record in a blazing time of 58.42. That swim eclipsed her previous record of 58.66 set in Rio on the prelim medley relay. Masse won bronze in the event in a time of 58.76 in Rio.
Masse has now gone 58 four times in her career, and continues to inch closer to the world record of 58.12. That was set back in 2009 during the super suit era by Britain’s Gemma Spofforth. The swim is also three-one-hundredths better than what Katinka Hosszu went for gold at the Olympics (58.45). She moves past Hosszu to become the 5th fastest performer in history.
Analyzing the splits, Masse came home under 30 for the first time in her career while also going out in her second fastest opening split ever at 28.43.

Masse has a clear path to gold tonight, as Hilary Caldwell and Dominique Bouchard sit 2nd and 3rd over two seconds behind at 1:00.62 and 1:00.74 respectively.
The University of Toronto Varsity Blue and now Speedo athlete is coming off an incredible varsity season that saw her sweep gold in the backstroke events at the U Sport Championships, including narrowly missing the Canadian SC 200 back record held by Caldwell in 2:02.80.
At the Short Course World Championships in her hometown of Windsor in December, she lowered her own SC 100 back record winning silver behind Hosszu, and added a silver in the 400 medley relay.
She is also entered to swim the 50 back, 200 back and 200 IM in Victoria.
Canada had better be careful .They are replicating the DDR pattern of women swimmers at the top & middling men . .Can’t sic Canadian McClaren onto them .
May I suggest Ms Susan Rice as the new face of unmasking to investigate any possible masking . Lol & they moaned about Fancybears !
I don’t get it: why such a race now, in the morning. She is a clear leader in the team at 100bk and this meet is definitely not for the selection purpose to her. It is for the record. Well, if she feels power let things happen.

The same reason that someone like Ledecky breaks 1500m WRs in heats: a chance to swim fast, practice, test oneself. What’s not to get?
You are right with only one correction. In case of Ledecky, she set another world record next day. So the prelim race was indeed just a prelim not full power race that happened to be faster than one year old world record. Kylie Masse set personal best in prelim race in Rio and then were slower in both finals. Let’s hope that she will break this tradition and the 100 bk final tonight will be even more impressive as in case with Katie Ledecky.
