In the finals of the women’s 200 breaststroke at the 2024 U.S. Olympic trials, Kate Douglass re-broke her own U.S. qualifying meet championship record, clocking a time of 2:19.46. The previous record was a time of 2:19.66 set by Douglass in prelims, and the previous pre-meet record was a time of 2:20.38 from Rebecca Soni back in 2009.
Douglass finished first in her race by 2.47 seconds, qualifying for her second individual event of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games after doing so in the 100 free Wednesday night. She was just 0.16 seconds off of her American record time set in January 2024.
Split Comparison:
Kate Douglass, 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials | Kate Douglass, 2024 Knoxville Pro Swim Series | |
50m | 31.58 | 32.01 |
100m | 35.35 | 35.04 |
150m | 35.88 | 35.92 |
200m | 36.65 | 36.33 |
T0tal | 2:19.46 | 2:19.30 |
Douglass was ahead of American record pace for the first 150 meters of her race, and was even out in a blistering 1:06.93. However, her final 50 meters of the race were0 0.32 seconds slower.
The only remaining events left on Douglass’s trials schedule are the 200 IM and the 50 free, though she has alluded to multiple times in the past that she would not be swimming the 50 free at trials.
Douglass is swimming great. Even better length per stroke than her norm. She hit the second wall perfectly at the end of a full stroke. But the other three were long glide. Douglass would have broken her own American record if either of the final two walls hadn’t been long glide.
It didn’t mean anything tonight. But she’s got to clean that up and be able to adjust strokes heading to the wall in Paris. Otherwise Tatiana will say thank you very much and steal a vital tenth or two every time.
The most elegant swimmer. And so clutch!
And will be even better in Paris….
I so want to see a sub 2:18.95
Mother is in the form of her life
I think we may be looking at a 2:06 in the IM
It’s time for her and Alex to do that. They are both capable of taking down Hozzu’s record.
That’s the biggest claim ever
Nah that’s not even the biggest claim today.
Earlier in the day, Swimdad predicted Regan Smith to break 200 fly WR and Kate Douglas to break 200 breast WR.
Quite reasonable.
When you’re good to Mama… Mama’s good to you
I saw this live!!!
She crushed it!
Thats how you swim breaststroke!!!
