HAC is a non-profit swim club that has a 90-year history in Hamilton, and between 450-500 swimmers across our Swim School, Junior Competitive, and Competitive Programs. HAC is looking for a Head Age Group Coach who will foster the love of the sport, bring positive energy, and focus on engaging our swimmers. The Head Age Group Coach will have direct coaching, program development, and administrative responsibilities. Major responsibilities and expectations include:

Coaching

  • Primary coaching responsibilities for several competitive age groups, including on deck coaching, dryland training preparation and supervision, and program development, as well as support to competitive groups as needed.
  • Attending, evaluating, and supervising swimmers at competitive events both at home and away, including provision of coverage for senior level competitive groups as needed, based on per diem compensation detailed in the Payroll Policy.

Program Development and Administration

  • Assisting in the development and execution of an annual comprehensive swimming strategy that identifies the best technical training to elevate HAC swimming in collaboration with HAC coaches.
  • Assisting in the development and monitoring of annual operational plan, with a focus on program and group structure, athlete allocation to groups, move-up processes, practice schedules and coach development.
  • Collaborating with the Board of Directors, Executive Director, and Head Coach, in developing a 5-year strategic plan, including short- and long-term visioning and goals, incorporating feedback from staff and stakeholders.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of a well-rounded meet schedule for HAC athletes and the management of meets in Team Unify.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum NCCP Age Group Coach Certified Level 1, higher certifications are considered an asset.
  • Providing an up-to-date police record check and vulnerable sector check that is acceptable to the HAC Board of Directors prior to commencing employment, and providing subsequent checks as required under club policies or as may be required by law.
  • Maintaining coaching certification with Swim Ontario and abiding by the Swim Ontario Coaches Code of Conduct and Ethics.
  • Must pass all appropriate background checks and Safe Sport Certification.
  • Current NLS & Standard First Aid an asset.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead coach for developmental pre-team. Conduct group practices and teach competitive swimming techniques to athletes of a wide range of ages and abilities.

About the Position:

The primary role of this position is to provide teaching, coaching, and technical expertise needed to allow the student-athlete to compete at their highest competitive potential, including all coaching and/or teaching duties associated with the program. This includes the oversight and management of the safety and well-being of those student athletes assigned to their coaching care. In the absence of the Head Coach, the Assistant Coach is expected to act on behalf of the Head Coach on any and all related program issues. The Assistant Coach assists the Head Coach in all aspects of a highly competitive Division I program.

 

This position requires flexible working hours, including evenings and weekends.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and Coaching:
    • Utilizes sound teaching techniques in the conduct of game preparation and practice sessions;
    • Assists in making strategic decisions in contest situations;
    • Effectively prepares and organizes pre-season, in-season and post-season conditioning programs and practice sessions;
    • Oversees the strength and conditioning development of the athletes;
    • Assists the Head Coach in the evaluation of the student-athlete; and
    • Remains aware, and maintains a safe and healthy environment for the student-athlete.

 

  • Department, University, Conference and NCAA Compliance:
    • Abides by and promotes the aims, goals, and objectives established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach;
    • Abides by and promotes the policies, guidelines, rules, regulations and criteria established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach for the student-athlete;
    • Knows, understands and assures that the student-athletes abide by all the University, Atlantic 10, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Rules and Regulations;
    • Knows, understands and abides by all University, A10 and NCAA Rules and Regulations;
    • Remains aware and abides by the rules of confidentiality (Buckley Amendment);
    • Understands and abides by proper procedures of due process in dealing with the student-athlete and staff;
    • Follows the administrative procedures established by the University and written up in the Department Staff Handbook; and
    • Assists Head Coach in developing and implementing the overall recruiting strategy to effectively recruit the best student-athlete within the admissions, financial and regulatory constraints established by the University, A10, and NCAA.

 

  • Acts as Team Liaison to:
    • Equipment office staff to order, monitor and control all team equipment;
    • Business Office and Coaches Support Assistant on program operations, logistics, planning and team travel; and
    • Academic Services (study hall and tutoring).
  • Participates in fundraising efforts and special events; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President/Director of Intercollegiate Athletics or Sport Administrator.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree or a combination of training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree;
  • Demonstrated experience coaching at the college level and/or professional experience in the field of swim and dive;
  • Knowledge and understanding of Atlantic 10, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Rules and Regulations;
  • Solid demonstrated knowledge of the sport, including rules, strategies, and techniques;
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Advanced organizational and time-management skills;
  • Ability to motivate and inspire players to achieve their full potential;
  • Ability to demonstrate effective leadership qualities;
  • CPR/First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire (required); and
  • Valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one prior to the start date. Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. Priorities:

1. Budget and Financial Performance
  • Responsible for developing and managing the aquatics budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Makes necessary purchases, inventories, and deliveries of all program-related supplies in accordance with Association standards
2. Program Development and Membership Development
  • Directs and supervises all aquatic program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Establishes new program activities and expands programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Creates and schedules swim classes, rentals, water exercise, and family events in the pool.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the program and participation 
3. Team Performance Towards Organizational Goals
  • Recruits, hires, trains, schedules and supervises all aquatic personnel and volunteers.  Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, oxygen administration, swim instructor First Aid and CPR training.
  • Assists with Program Committee and Cabinet meetings as necessary. 
  • Ensures all aquatics staff is trained in emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.  Follows expectations of regular in-service training for staff and completes all related reports for record keeping.  
4. Fundraising
  • Actively participates in YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
  • Professional Development
  • Completes employee training as required, including NSO, Bloodborne Pathogens and Child Abuse Prevention.
  • Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, COVID-19 health and safety precautions, regulations, and best practices as outlined by the Association.
  • Is able to perform all functions as those they supervise and meets qualifications and certifications of Lifeguard III and Swim Instructor.

5. Facility Management
  • Conducts and ensures proper maintenance of outdoor pools and indoor pools. Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance in adherence with state, local, and YMCA health and safety regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Minimum age of 21.
  2. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Automated External Diffibulator, Basic First Aid.  
  3. Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding certifications (instructor level).   
  4. Current Swim Instructor Certification preferred, or obtained within 90 days of hire.
  5. Current Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator certification preferred, or obtained within 60 days of hire.
  6. Preferred candidates will have a minimum experience of 3-5 years in the aquatics field.
  7. A college degree in a relevant field is preferred.
  8. Will be required to have trainer certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, AED, Emergency Oxygen, Swim Instructor and Lifeguarding within 1 year of employment. 
  9. Ability to maintain all required certifications and the necessary level of physical and mental readiness.
  10. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  11. 3+ years of supervisory experience in the aquatics field.

  6. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  7. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  8. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
  9. Ability to work inside and outside (environments include humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions).
  10. Must be able to lift and pull 75 pounds for a rescue.
