Tennessee Aquatics (TNAQ) is currently accepting applications for a Full-Time Age Group coaching position. Tennessee Aquatics is a USA Swimming registered year round swimming and diving team serving athletes of all levels by offering USA Swimming and USA Diving competitive programs, USMS masters swimming, non-competitive swim groups, and lessons programs. Tennessee Aquatics is a Level 3 Program in USA Swimming’s Club Recognition Program and is consistently one of the top teams at Junior Nationals. The club trains at the University of Tennessee’s Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center and the University’s Student Aquatic Center, allowing our athletes access to 30 SCY lanes and 18 LCM lanes during the competitive season.

Tennessee Aquatics is looking for an individual who is energetic, knowledgeable, ethical, and able to effectively communicate with parents, fellow coaches, and swimmers of all ages. Candidates should be organized, professional, and understand the importance of leading by example while inspiring a love for swimming and healthy competition. Candidates must be able to work as part of a coaching team and be, or become, ASCA Certified Level 1. Candidates must also be, or become, current on all applicable certifications (First Aid, CPR, Safety Training for Swim Coaches) required by USA Swimming for non-athlete coach membership. Starting date is August 18, 2019.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, management of meet entries, attendance at meets (1 to 2 per month), roster management, attendance at coaches meetings, writing/coaching practices, administrative duties as assigned with office hours, tracking performance, and communicating with parents/conducting parent meetings. Candidates must be able to work in conjunction with other staff to develop progressive season plans that help swimmers develop proper stroke techniques and optimal swim progressions. Coaches are also expected to help grow the competitive team’s membership and help plan and organize team activities/events.

Age Group Practices: afternoon practices are held Monday – Friday 4:30-7:00 PM throughout the school year (summer schedule is different), Saturday practices are held at 7:30-10:00 AM. Additionally, the coach will be required to attend 1 to 2 meets a month.

Job Responsibilities

Head Coach Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to:

● Teach and demonstrate the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in all relationships and act as a positive role model at all times.

● Plan, prepare for and conduct all team practices, 3 age/ability groups, 4-6 days/week in late afternoon, evening and Saturdays. Includes stroke technique and development, endurance, strength, starts and turns, and dry land workouts.

This position must be able to remain in or near chlorinated water for extended periods of time. This position may occasionally move objects weighing up to 10 lbs. This position will be required to move about the pool deck and office, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, climb, and reach. This position should be physically fit and have the endurance to perform CPR.

This position must be able to be exposed to pool chemicals and indoor swimming pool conditions, including high humidity and varying degrees of temperature and light. The noise level of the environment is moderate to loud.

This position must also be able to work in a stressful environment due to the responsibility for the safety of patrons and the possibility of working with special needs individuals while remaining in control and resolving problems with participants. This position must have a positive attitude, be able to multi-task and handle daily interruptions successfully. This position must have strong problem solving skills, be flexible and have good verbal and non-verbal communication skills; along with the ability to follow directives and give clear direction to others. Previous experience & skills

  • Prior experience coaching an open water or triathlon program
  • Strong emphasis on safety and understanding of dynamic ocean conditions
  • Competitive swimming experience and knowledge of stroke mechanics and race strategy
  • Demonstrated experience coaching both competitive and recreational swimmers
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor, provide leadership, and exhibit a positive, team-building attitude
  • Physical demands including the ability to instruct and observe participants (out of and in the water), lift and move light equipment
  • Technical abilities of basic email, web applications, microsoft word, excel, powerpoint
  • Organization and planning abilities (travel planning, scheduling, correspondence)
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Preferred USMS Certified Coach or USAS Coaching Member or USAT Certified Coach or WOWSA Certified Coach, Adult CPR/First Aid

Compensation & reporting

  • Competitive compensation to be on an hourly basis (or stipend based compensation) for coaching as well as time spent on administrative and planning tasks.
  • Travel expenses and per-diem, annual National Governing Body coaching membership, conferences and development workshops as approved by the board of directors
  • Open water coach reports to the head swimming coach
  • Continual performance feedback and compensation review annually with board of directors

Associate Head Coach – UC Santa Cruz Swim and Dive

The Associate Head Coach will assist the Head Coach with all aspects of the day to day operations of coaching the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams at UC Santa Cruz.  Duties shall include, but are not limited to, season planning, budgeting, recruiting, making travel arrangements, writing and implementing workouts for their own and likely other training groups, and assisting with fundraising and alumni outreach.  Candidates should have 5 or more years of coaching experience, preferably college.  Candidates must also possess or be able to obtain certifications in CPR/AED, Lifeguarding, and be in good standing with USA Swimming.  UCSC is a Division III institution that promotes success in the pool as well as the classroom.
