Israeli National Record Holder Aviv Barzelay Commits to Texas A&M

Israeli National Record holder Aviv Barzelay has committed to Texas A&M University, and is scheduled to arrive for the 2020-2021 season. The 17-year old Barzelay set the Israeli Record this summer in the 200 long course meter backstroke in 2:11.91.

She has represented her team at several major international meets, including the recent European Short Course Championships in December and last summer’s World Junior Championships – the meet where she set the backstroke National Record. Her best finish at the European Short Course Championships was 21st in that 200 backstroke, while at the World Junior Championships she scored a finals swim in the 200 backstorke. She also made a finals appearance at the 2019 European JUnior Championships, finishing 5th overall.

Best Times in Yards:

The Texas A&M program has a long history of success in the 200 backstroke, which includes 2018 World Short Course Champion in the event Lisa Bratton and 2009 World University Games silver medalist Kristen Heiss. The team also had 2014 NCAA National Champion in the 100 back Paige Miller.

The Texas A&M women finished 13th at last year’s NCAA Championship meet, which snapped historic streak of 12 consecutive top-10 finishes and 6-consecutive top-4 finishes at that meet. A 2020 recruiting class that is big both in number
