Helena Gasson Breaks New Zealand National Record in 100 Butterfly

2021 INTERNATIONAL SWIMMING LEAGUE – SEASON 3, MATCH 4

New Zealand’s Helena Gasson, swimming for the LA Current in the 2021 season of the International Swimming League, lowered her home country’s National Record in the 100 butterfly on Saturday in Naples.

Gasson’s swim Saturday is her third New Zealand National Record of the 2021 ISL season. Gasson lowered both the 50 butterfly (25.50) and 100 butterfly (57.46) National Records in Match 2.

FINA has not yet recognized Gasson’s National Records, though they are eligible for ratification, per an agreement reached between FINA and the ISL in 2019. At present, FINA officially lists New Zealand’s National Records in the 50 butterfly as belonging to Danielle Koni (26.53 – 2010) and Sophia Batchelor (58.42 – 2012). This stands in contrast to what is recognized by Gasson’s own NGB, New Zealand Swimming, which lists Gasson as the National Record Holder in the 50 butterfly following her 25.83 swum at the 2021 ASA Short Course Championships in late July, and as the National Record holder in the 100 butterfly, which is listed as a 57.58, established at the 2020 ISL regular season Match 3.
