The Glenvar Highlanders prevailed on the girl’s side of the 2021 VHSL Combined Class 1/2 Swimming & Diving State Championships. Glenvar scored a total of 287 points over the weekend, beating runner-up Strasburg High School (209) and second runner-up Marion Senior High (152).

Claire Griffith won the 50 freestyle for Glenvar, posting a 25.26 which was just a bit over her seed time in the event of 24.99. While she was off her best, she still out-touched Marion Senior’s Kennedy Williams who was a 25.99 for silver, and Bruton High School’s Amari Randall with a 26.04 for silver.
Griffth also picked up silver in the 100 freestyle, swimming a 55.09 behind fellow Glenvar sprinter Reese Dunkenberger who won the event with a 52.78. Dunkenberger’s swim was only 0.48 seconds off her own meet record of 52.30 which she set back in 2019.
Dunkenberger made it 2-for-2 wins for Glenvar as she picked up gold in the 100 backstroke. She won in a 58.08, under her entry time of 58.58 by half a second. George Wythe’s Morgan Dalton came in at a 1:02.36 for silver and Amelia Austin followed with a 1:04.37 for bronze for Virginia High School.
George Wythe High School junior Tatum Robinson collected double gold by winning both the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly. Robinson defended her 2020 title in the 200 IM, swimming a 2:09.73 to win this year’s title, compared to the 2:10.42 she swam to win last year. She was met on the podium by Kate Elliot from Poquoson High School (2:19.22) for silver and Strasburg’s Abigail Davis (2:23.62) for bronze.
In the 100 fly, Robinson was a 57.92 as the only swimmer in the field to crack a minute. Abbi Kawastsky followed with a 1:00.64 for bronze and Catherine Thomas was third in a 1:02.75.
Kayla Sprincis picked up a gold and a silver for Clarke County High School in the 500 and 200 freestyles, respectively. In the 500, Sprincis hit a 5:20.71 for the victory, around 9 seconds slower than her PB of 5:09.23 from last March. Mia Llamas came in 2 seconds later in the event, swimming a 5:22.19 for Galax Maroon while Abbi Kawatsky was a 5:29.44 for third.
Sprincis and Llamas swapped places in the 200 freestyle final and Llamas took gold in a 1:57.76 while Sprincis trailed with a 2:01.99 for silver. They were joined by Catherine Thomas from Appomattox who swam a 2:05.11 for bronze.
In the final individual event of the meet, Poquoson’s Kate Elliott took gold in the 100 breast with a 1:11.72. Abigail Davis from Strasburg and Poquoson teammate Kate Lee battled for the silver with Davis ultimately getting in first with a 1:13.40 to Lee’s 1:13.42.
Other Notable Wins:
- Glenvar took the 200 yard medley (1:55.89), 200 yard freestyle (1:44.96), and 400 yard freestyle (4:02.69) titles
- Tommie Bloomer won the 1-meter diving event for Radford High School
