The team battles at the 2020 Virginia Class 2 State Championships came down to the wire. The Glenvar girls took the win by just 10 points over Bruton. It was even close on the men’s side, with Radford winning the meet by 1 point ahead of Virginia High.
The Radford boys didn’t win any events, but had the depth to come away with the team victory. Virginia High, on the other hand, got a trio of wins. Cooper Gobble made a big drop in the 100 free for the title. His 48.78 took over 2 seconds off his best coming into this meet. Bruton’s Caleb Hall was 2nd there in 49.57, also breaking 50 for the first time at this meet. In the 50 free, Hall out-touched Gobble, 22.52 to 22.54, as both hit lifetime bests. Gobble dropped over 2 seconds in that event.
Gobble was also a member of Virginia High’s winning 200 free relay (1:32.50) and 200 medley relay (1:44.24). Gobble split a 29.31 breast leg on the medley. He led off the 200 free relay in 22.63.
Glenvar’s Reese Dunkenberger and Claire Griffith combined to sweep the sprints in their team’s victory. Dunkenberger was half a second shy of her own Class 2 Record in the 100 free. She repeated as champion in 52.81. Griffith, a freshman, won her first state title with a 25.37 in the 50 free. That was a best by over a second.
Union High’s Ashley Cusano won the 100 fly in a new Class 2 Record. She set a lifetime best 53.92 to repeat as champion, breaking her own former mark. Cusano went on to win the 100 back in 55.58 for another repeat title, just 2 tenths shy of her record from last season. There was also a Class 2 Record set on the boys’ side. Bruton’s Jacob Sprigg was tenths shy of his lifetime best, but still nearly a second under the former record as he won the 200 free in 1:42.29. He also won the 100 fly in 50.72, just 2 tenth shy of a best.
George Wythe’s Tatum Robinson also won an individual double. Robinson was just 2 hundredths off her best to win the 200 IM in 2:10.42. She was also within hundredths of a best in the 100 breast, winning the title in 1:08.84.
