Wednesday, November 11, 2020 is Early Signing Day for the high school class of 2021. We have written over 830 articles about prospective student-athletes from the class of 2021 who have made verbal commitments to swim or to dive for a college program, an increase of about 230 over the class of 2020’s early commitments at this time a year ago. (Note: We have another 200 or so on our waiting list, and we’re getting to them as fast as we can.) Many of those verbal commitments become contractual agreements tomorrow, as the second Wednesday in November marks the official opening of signing season for the current seniors in high school.
The NCAA regulates when prospective student-athletes can sign a National Letter of Intent (NLI), which is the binding agreement between an athlete and an NLI member institution. In past years, there was a week-long “Early” Signing Period that began the second Wednesday in November, followed by a “Regular” Signing Period which stretched, for most sports, from February to August. In 2018, the NCAA instituted changes to the recruiting timetable and the two signing periods have now been joined. You can see all the signing periods for the student-athletes enrolling in the 2021-22 school year on the NLI website here.

Does swimming get any exciting signing day flips? It doesn’t seem like it, but should we make it ‘fun’ and start rumors like Tim Connery flipping back to Michigan, Anthony Grimm staying ‘home’ at UVA, or the Indiana recruits scattering elsewhere (or does that only happen after Freshman year)?
Re rank the swimmers
On what grounds? there have been almost no meets, and it is always a spring thing. All the top athletes are already committed so its not like it is affecting them getting a scholarship. this just seems like the stupidest year of all to rerank swimmers because there is effectively no change (except for the one JR boy who will be ranked top 5 after going completely unranked last year).
The remaining ‘real’ re-rank is going to be the 2022 (and 2023) NCAA championships. Anything before then is just a COVID driven thumb in the air.
Someone enlighten me. Is there a limit to how many athletes a team can “pull” through admissions based on NCAA regs, or is this just school policy? How does a school like Cal, one of the 5 hardest public schools in the country to gain admissions to, get 14 women in a single class? And correct me if I’m wrong, but you can’t sign an NLI unless you are being offered some form of financial consideration, right? So, will a school like Cal just commit 5% scholarships to 14 women to get them locked up, or are many of these names listed just potential walk-ons and preferred walk-ons for which an NLI won’t be executed?
Most in state swimmers would receive a book scholarship, which requires an NLI.
