After an intrasquad meet last weekend, Bowling Green State University Swimming and Diving Team opened the 2014-15 season with the Tom Stubbs Relays in their home pool. The Falcons played host to University of Akron, University of Toledo, University of Findlay, and Youngstown State University.
The meet began with a record in the very first event, and continued to break meet records as it went along. Bowling Green’s 200 medley relay A team (Maya Skorupski, Daniela Carrillo, Jordan Bullock and Kayla Effinger) started things off with a meet record of 1:44.67, about a second and a half in front of Toledo. Next the Falcons set a new mark (with Estela Davis, Victoria Griffin and Bullock) in the 3×100 butterfly relay, with 2:51.84; Akron and Toledo finished second and third.
In the 3×100 back relay, Bowling Green (Skorupski, Hannah Newman and Davis) went nearly four seconds under the previous meet record, touching in 2:48.33. Akron was also under the old mark. The 3×100 breast record was the next to fall, with Bowling Green (Carmen Young, Carrillo and Kristin Filby) getting the win in 3:14.47. The Falcons were seven seconds ahead of second-place Toledo.
Bowling Green (Davis, Griffin, Erica Nieminen, and Newman) dominated the 800 free relay (7:38.88) but missed the record by 1.5 seconds; Toledo, Akron and Youngstown State battled for second with Toledo getting to the wall in 7:50.37 ahead of the other two.
The host Falcons (Davis, Carrillo, Bullock and Griffin) set a meet record in the 400 medley relay, going 3:49.72, 2.3 seconds under the previous mark. Akron came in next, ahead of BGSU’s B squad.
Bowling Green’s 200 free relay (Effinger, Sadie Ahlers, Newman and Griffin) was the next to lower a meet record; their 1:35.49 just eclipsed the old one and put them two seconds in front of Akron and Toledo, who touched nearly together with 1:37-mids.
Toledo dominated the 3×500 free relay; they finished in 15:40.11, well ahead of Bowling Green and Akron but no threat to the meet record they had set in 2011.
Bowling Green (Davis, Carrillo, Bullock and Griffin) set their last meet record in the 4×100 medley relay. Their 4:01.19 beat the mark set by Toledo in 2011 by 6/10. Toledo, second at 4:01.79, was .01 slower than their record.
Bowling Green finished the meet with a win (from Effinger, Davis, Newman and Griffin) in the 400 free relay (3:31.56), just 4/10 off their eighth meet record. Toledo came in second.
The Tom Stubbs Relays is not a scored meet, but Bowling Green clearly came out in full force. The team has made huge strides over the last several seasons and continues to improve. This start should give the Falcons plenty of confidence as they take on the 2014-15 season.
