Bobby Finke Talks Stellar Closing Speed that Netted Him Double Gold in Tokyo

In the SwimSwam Podcast dive deeper into the sport you love with insider conversations about swimming. Hosted by Coleman HodgesGarrett McCaffrey, and Gold Medal Mel Stewart, SwimSwam welcomes both the biggest names in swimming that you already know, and rising stars that you need to get to know, as we break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.

We sat down with the double Olympic champion in both distance events, Bobby Finke. Finke takes us through both his Olympic Trials experience and Olympic experience, noting his experience from previous national teams had helped him feel ready to seize this moment. Finke gives a play-by-play of both 800 and 1500 from the Olympic Games, where he had monstrous last-50 splits to pass the field and take the gold in both races.

His turns are FANTASTIC, and they give him a huge advantage in being able to able to glide longer and further and conserve energy for kicking into that final gear.

If anyone should be able to benefit from the NCAA likeness rules, it’s Bobby. Two individual gold medals at his first Olympics, a genuinely likable, good-looking and hard working guy with a signature swimming style that even the layperson watching on TV remembers. He deserves a lucrative swimwear contract.

Stole these closing splits from another site:
25.78 Bobby Finke, 14:39.65
25.70 Paul Biedermann, 1:42.00 *suit-assisted
25.77 Paul Biedermann, 3:40.07 *suit-assisted
25.99 Lin Zhang, 7:32.12 *suit-assisted
25.68 Sun Yang, 14:31.12 *chemical-assisted

And at these Olympic finals, you have to go down to the 100m to find a faster split that wasn’t an opening 50.

Dude is a star. Unsung hero for USA Men before the Games.

Just so happy to see him excelling and enjoying himself. Excited to see what he delivers in the next 3 years.

— How do you swim the last 25 of a 1500 under 13 seconds?
— I take it easy and get ready for it during the first 1475

I root against the Gators in everything but I’ve kind of got to set that aside in swimming. Glad I learned that a long time ago. It was nice to see Grant Holloway and Will Claye fail.
