Gabriel Jett Reflects on Minnesota Invite, Training in Cal Distance Group This Fall

2024 Minnesota Invite

Gabriel Jett is off to a sizzling start in his senior season but not in events you might expect. At the Minnesota Invite, Jett posted top-10 times nationwide (and huge PBs) in the 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM. Jett also swam the 3 events that he’s competed in at his last 3 NCAA Championships, the 200/500 Free and 200 Fly, but was well off of his personal bests in all 3.

The Cal senior explains that for his senior year, he wanted to leave no stone unturned and fully commit to whatever plan head coach Dave Durden had for him, which ended up meaning training much more with the distance group than in previous years. It also meant putting a heavy emphasis on Jett’s underwater work, which may explain his drops in backstroke and IM events.

Either way, it seems like Jett is going in a positive direction heading into the rest of his last NCAA season.

Wonderful interview, Coleman. You appeared to be enjoying Gabriel’s very thoughtful answers.

If he was 44/1:38 in the backs and 1:41 in the IM while being pretty far off his best times in his other events, you’d think he has a decent amount of time to drop in the backs and IM.

An impressive young man. I had a good conversation with him on deck a few months ago at Legends and walked away thinking he really gets it. I feel like we recruit guys like this that evolve into the leaders on the team and do it the right way.

Will he bomb out at NCAAs again? Faster in the 500 in a dual meet in frigid rain than NCAAs falls squarely on the shoulders of one of the alleged “all time great” coaches. And Jett’s whole career been a long course dud other than when he randomly swam a fast 200 fly at an irrelevant meet. Get this man some real coaching

Andrew’s brutal with it, but I was interested to hear Jett talking about the inconsistency at NCAA’s and trying to get that right this year

He swam that LC 200 fly at 2022 US Nationals. Wouldn’t call that an irrelevant meet, but I would agree that he hasn’t been close to that since.

I’m with Andrew on this one. It doesn’t get special status just bc its long course. It’s not an international meet or a qualification meet, so it’s not important. At least to us fans

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
