Another day, another prize money post about Gretchen Walsh.
On the final day of the 2024 World Championships, Walsh earned another $42,500 in prize money by winning gold in the 50 free and 4×100 medley relay. She also got world record bonuses in both races, taking the full $25,000 bonus in the 50 free and $6,250 for the relay, as the bonus was divided amongst four swimmers. Her total prize money number for this meet is $290,416.67.
In fact, Walsh outearned every other country in terms of prize money except for the United States, which made a total of $974,000. The second-highest earning country was Canada, which accumulated $241,000.

Walsh’s American teammate Regan Smith moved up to second in the prize money standings following a $52,750 paycheck from Sunday alone. She got a $25,000 world record bonus from the 200 back, as well as $10,000 for taking the double crown in the event (winning it at all World Cup stops and short course worlds).

-NCAA swimmers can keep prize money up to their expenses; then there is a massive loophole where they can accept rewards from their National Olympic Committees, so as long as the rest of their prize money is funneled through those organizations (checks are all written to national federations, not athletes directly), it’s kosher.

There are definitely World Record bonuses written into many sponsorship agreements, especially from suit companies. Who and how much remains a black box.
I did a little digging into Olympic sports endorsement contracts and it really does run the gamut but most estimates put it in the 50K or more depending on the athlete (Phelps wad rumored to get $250k) Now there could be max incentives a swimmer can top out at which more than likely exist.
While I’m skeptical Walsh’s payout from endorsements will match her winnings, the possibility certainly exists, especially when you consider all of her different endorsements

What has Alex done to deserve any comparable amount of prize money? At best, she’s the #2 American 200 IM performer on the international stage (when you factor in McIntosh/McKeown), she’s only 3rd or 4th best), and she can occasionally participate in relays during prelims. She had her brief moment of fame in 2021, but she appears destined to exist in Gretchen’s imposing shadow for the rest of her swimming career.

It’s remarkable how quickly the amounts drop off. Sure, GWalsh had a huge payday, and a handful of others came away with six figures, but most people (incredible athletes still, compared to almost anyone) came away without even close to enough prize money to live on.
I’m here to tell you kids: Stay in school. Swimming ain’t gonna pay the bills for most of you!
To be honest I’m surprised to the contrary. If I’m one of the ~60 athletes who made $10k+ for a paid week of competing I’m feeling pretty good.
And the sport is moving away from the all-or-nothing championships cycle, there’s plenty of these athletes that could do world cup stops to make some money.
Again, not like this is what kids should be aiming for. However, this looks more sustainable than it ever has– especially with most high-profile athletes showing that they don’t care for these competitions.
But it’s not just a week of competition. The athletes who earned $10k (which is still WAY more than average) competed for a week, but put in countless hours of unpaid training. From a purely financial perspective, most would be better off spending that time working a minimum wage job.
Obviously, most people aren’t in it for the money. (I competed for 12+ years and never earned a paycheck from swimming.)
But this isn’t their only money-earning opportunity either, so the training hours would have to be amortized across their entire lifetime of earnings to decide which way was “better off”.
I continue to LOL at people who thinks athletes should be paid for “training” versus “performance.”
I don’t remember my first employer out of school back-dating my compensation to start at the beginning of my “training” for that job in preschool.
That just isn’t how late-stage capitalism works.
What Braden said. That’s kind of why I referenced the sport moving out of the all or nothing championship cycle. It’s not like their training is expended during this one competition. They can go to other competitions and continue to get endorsement deals and sponsorships.
I’m not saying that it’s a secure or lavish path, but between the commercial opportunities and the various prize pots available through the year there is definitely a portion of the top percentile who can make this work.
Adding World Champion medalist to your resume likely results in a large increase in income opportunity via endorsements, particularly in many of the swimmers’ home countries.
Comparing to other sports isn’t helpful but comparing to where we were 10/5 years ago is – and we are seeing huge increases. Still have a ways to go
I know Katie Ledecky is making a living from swimming (endorsements and prize money), and GWalsh is likely in that echelon now.
I’d love to know what swimmers just a shade down from them can realistically expect to make. Someone like a Paige Madden, Emma Weyent, or Alex Shackell (all Olympic medalists, but no individual golds). I would expect that all of these women will need to eventually find a career that isn’t swimming (unless they break through to individual golds and world records), but I would love to hear otherwise!

This whole conversation between swimming vs real job vs school is so moot I don’t even know where to begin.
First of all, swimming is a privileged sport. You’re not going to find a swimmer among the lower classes or even get close to the plethora of young athletes in basketball or football with some unrealistic dream.
Swimmers don’t bypass college graduation. Swimmers have the ability to bank their degrees for several years while they ride the financial coattails of their parents. Swimmers are typically the smartest of athletes garnering higher GPAs than most. They are resourceful, connected, and swimming professionally only enhances their stock.

There are plenty of swimmers who don’t come from economic privilege, and plenty more who haven’t been able to make their way financially (despite significant earnings).
There have been several recent cases of swimmers leaving NCAA programs to focus on training with their clubs, go pro, etc.
