2024 Winter Junior Championships – East

With day 3 of the 2024 Winter Junior Championships – East in the books, it’s time for another edition of ‘Swims You May Have Missed’. As always, this post is dedicated to highlighting some of the swims on the day that may not have been at the very top of the results and, therefore, flown under the radar as far as our coverage on the recap goes. With so many events today, there’s surely a ton of such swims, and we’re only going to highlight some of them, so feel free to drop others in the comments to bring attention to them.

Starting out with a swim that did take place in an ‘A’ final, Sarasota Sharks 16-year-old Madyson Hartway was on fire in the girls 100 breast on Friday. She entered the meet with a personal best of 1:02.65, which seeded her 29th, then dropped a 1:01.24 in prelims, which was 5th, enough to make the ‘A’ final. In finals, Hartway once again finished 5th, taking her time down to 1:01.03, for a total drop of 1.62 seconds on the day in the event.

Greater Kalamazoo Crocs 16-year-old Liam Smith was very impressive in prelims of the boys 400 IM as well. Smith came into the morning seeded 30th with his career best of 3:56.06, then broke out with a 3:49.52 in prelims, securing a lane in the ‘A’ final with an 8th-place finish.

Another Michigan swimmer, Trae Lewis from Spartan Aquatic Club, entered the meet as the 80th seed in the boys 400 IM with a 4:00.30. He then put up a 3:54.33 in prelims, finishing 21st and qualifying for the ‘C’ final.

The boys 400 IM was full of huge swims. 14-year-old Parker Van Olst out of New Wave Swim Team went under 4:00 for the first time in his young career, blowing through that barrier with a 3:56.78. 15-year-old Issac Adanin from Club Wolverine took 15 seconds off his personal best, swimming a 3:58.78. Adanin’s previous best in the event was 4:14.21.

In the boys 100 fly, Bolles School Sharks 17-year-old Nick Marrero was entered with a personal best of 50.59, then blew right through the 50-second barrier and right past 49, swimming a huge new career best of 48.70.

Sarasota Tsunami Swim Team 15-year-old Andrew Malaj was phenomenal in prelims of the boys 200 free, swimming a 1:37.54 to take 2.44 seconds off his previous best of 1:39.98. The swim was good for 16th in prelims, advancing Malaj to the ‘B’ final.
