World Record holder Kaylee McKeown of Australia will kick off the morning with the women’s 200 backstroke as the top seed. McKeown is also the defending Olympic Champion in the event and already won gold in the 100 back this week. She enters with a 2:03.30. After winning silver in the 100 back this week, Regan Smith makes her first Olympic appearance in the 200 back with a 2:03.80 entry time. Smith is the former World Record holder in the event but missed qualifying for the event for the US in Tokyo.
2020 Tokyo silver medalist in the event Kylie Masse is the #3 seed with a 2:06.24 while Phoebe Bacon of the US makes her return to the event after finaling in the event in Tokyo. Bacon is the #4 seed here with a 2:06.27 entry time.
Australia’s Cam McEvoy is the top seed in the men’s 50 freestyle with a 21.06. He won the event at the 2023 World Championships and was silver in the event at 2024 Worlds. He will swim next to Caeleb Dressel of the US who won Olympic gold in the event in Tokyo and is the #4 seed with a 21.41.
Ben Proud of Great Britain won the 2022 World title in the 50 free and is the #2 seed with a 21.25. He has consistently been on the podium at the last three Worlds.
Wang Shun is the top seed in the men’s 200 IM and has the top time this season. He has an entry time of a 1:54.62 and won the event in Tokyo. Leon Marchand of France has already been on fire this week, going three for three in gold medals and Olympic Records in the 400 IM, 200 breast, and 200 fly. He is coming off of the 200 fly and 200 breast double last night and will look to make another semifinals. Marchand won the 2022 and 2023 World Championship titles in the event.
Carson Foster of the US already won bronze in the 400 IM this week and is the #3 seed in the 200 IM. He is seeded with a 1:55.65, just ahead of fellow American Shaine Casas who enters with a 1:55.83.
The women’s 4×200 free relay closes the morning. Australia comes in as the favorite after a 1-2 finish from Ariarne Titmus and Mollie O’Callaghan in the individual 200 free but expect both to rest up this morning. China won the event in a World Record time in Tokyo.
