2022 Short Course World Championships: Top 5 Nations Separating Themselves

2022 FINA SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Through day four of the 2022 Short Course World Championships, the United States maintained its lead in the overall medal table ahead of host nation Australia.

A 1-2 American punch in the women’s 200m breast by winner Kate Douglass and runner-up Lilly King helped the cause, as did Nic Fink‘s silver medal-earning performance in the men’s edition of the same race.

Claire Curzan snagged silver in the women’s 50m back while Ryan Murphy topped the 50m back podium for the men and Kensey McMahon was a somewhat surprise bronze medalist in tonight’s 1500m free for the stars n’ stripes.

The United States sealed the deal with a World Record-worthy performance in the men’s 4x200m free relay to end the night.

The Aussies weren’t exactly quiet here on day 4, however, as Lani Pallister completed her sweep of the women’s free distance events with her 1500m gold.

The nation’s mixed 4x50m free relay and men’s 4x200m free relay each garnered silver, while Mollie O’Callaghan logged a new Australian national record on her way to bronze in the 50m back. Isaac Cooper also added a silver medal by way of his runner-up status in the men’s 50m back.

Italy, Canada and South Africa comprise the remainder of the top 5 nations, while France bumped itself up from 7th to now 6th place, courtesy of the mixed 4x50m free relay World Record gold and Beryl Gastaldello‘s silver in the women’s 100m IM.

America should only be up by 1 because Ryan Murphy cheated

Ah so he was in collusion with the refs and the other 3 swimmers who stopped swimming the race? Good to know!

What started off 4 days ago looking a bit rocky, esp. on the men’s side, has turned out to be a very satisfactory
[if not better] campaign for TEAM USA. Of course, my two highlights were the 1/2 finish for the women in the 200 SC meters breast stroke, and that THRILLING 4 X 200 SC meters men’s relay – that was a WOW! And more to come.

The 100IM was a little disappointing.

I think more credit should be given to Hunter Armstrong:

  1. This is his first major meet as a professional. It certainly could be an adjustment period transitioning from college to professional, not to mention Ohio to California.
  2. He’s never been a short course swimmer. Maybe bash USA Swimming’s selection criteria but don’t bash the man who historically doesn’t swim well short course.

  1. What do you call the 2022 FINA World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary?
  2. Hunter “Magic Man” Armstrong never swam short course yards?

Hunter Armstrong is weaker in Short Course formats as he just doesn’t have the explosive underwaters that others do. He even commented on it when he “retired” from NCAA swimming that he wanted to focus on the big pool.
If you were expecting him to blow up SCM, that just shows your ignorance. The guy is built for the big pool.
