Coming off of the Westmont Pro Swim Series, SwimSwam drove 30 minutes east over to Aurora, Illinois, where the Fox Valley Park District Riptides were getting back into things. Now, that meant different things for different athletes.
For World Champ bronze medalist Leah Hayes (who won the 200/400 IM in Westmont), she was coming off of a high-level competition. However, most of her teammates were coming off of a 1-3 week break after their high school state meet. Either way, this was a pretty challenging practice to get through on a Monday evening.
Note: Since the group varies in skill level, this practice was more of a “do it at your own pace” vibe.

“7 to 9 PM practice”
PM??? Did I hear that right???
You did hear that right – that’s when they can get pool time
I don’t think 7-9PM is all that uncommon. I’ve heard of much later.
That’s honestly worse than AM practice IMO
If it makes you feel better my 9 year old is going to have 7:00-8:30 soccer practice in the fall. 7:00-9:00 is no biggie for a high school kid. Plenty of time to do schoolwork, eat dinner, go to an appointment etc. before practice. It’s probably nice to have that time instead of rushing to the pool from school just to be exhausted when you get home and still have homework to do.
As a person in their mid 30s, I agree. If I were 15, I might prefer it.
Young bodies have a different clock than ours. They’re not going to bed before midnight anyway (unless they have to get up at 4am for practice, which their biology doesn’t want them to do).
Jack and the boys are gunning for Leah, she’s going to have some tough workouts this year.
