UCLA Bruins Land Verbal Commitment from Breaststroker Emma Smethurst

Emma Smethurst of Walnut Creek, California, has announced her intention to swim for University of California, Los Angeles beginning in the fall of 2018. She will join fellow verbal commit Abriana Howard in the Bruins’ class of 2022.

“I chose UCLA because it is an amazing school with a great swim program. The opportunities at UCLA are endless. I am very excited to swim for coaches Cyndi and Naya and to be a part of the Bruin family!!”

Smethurst is a rising senior at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek, whom she represented at both the 2017 CIF-North Coast Section Championships and the California State Championships a week later. At the NCS meet she took 10th in the 100 breast and was 17th in the 200 IM. She also contributed to Northgate’s medley relay (the breast leg) and 200 free relay. Smethurst finished 34th in the 100 breast at the state meet.

Smethurst swims year-round for Walnut Creek Aquabears. She is a Summer Juniors qualifier in the LCM 100/200 breaststrokes and a Winter Juniors qualifier in the SCY 100/200 breasts.
