The 2025 Horizon League Championships concluded on Saturday, seeing the Oakland Golden Grizzlies win their 12th consecutive men’s and women’s title. In the end, Oakland won comfortably on both sides of the ledger, seeing the women win by 175 points, while the men won by a whopping 325 points. For their efforts, Oakland also won a number of awards.

Saturday evening saw a Horizon League Championship record fall, as Cleveland State’s Paddy Johnston took the men’s 200 fly in 1:44.67. With the performance he cracked the championship record, as well as the Cleveland State program record.

Oakland junior Harry Nicholson, who wound up winning Swimmer of the Meet, won the men’s 200 back in 1:42.01. The performance marks a career best for Nicholson, and put him just off the Oakland program and Horizon League record of 1:41.63, which Marko Khotynetskyi set back at the 2022 Horizon League Championships.

Nicholson went on to help the Oakland men’s 400 free relay to victory at the end of the meet. Nicholson led the team off in 43.11, which would have won the event individually, then Jack Wike (43.42), Christopher Palvadre (43.90), and Charlie Brown (42.75) rounded the relay out. The Golden Grizzlies finished in 2:53.18, touching just off the Horizon League record of 2:52.70, which Oakland set back in 2023.

Prior to helping the relay to victory, Palvadre won the men’s 200 breast in 1:55.33, touching 1st by more than 2 seconds. That swim marks a career best for the junior.

Similarly, Brown won the men’s 100 free before helping the relay to victory. Brown swam a new career best of 43.47 to win the event.

Oakland swept the 100 frees, as Ronja Riihinen took the women’s 100 free in 50.19.

Oakland’s Grace Albrecht, the Women’s Freshman of the Meet, won the women’s 200 back in 1:58.91. Albrecht was the only swimmer in the field under 2:00, and set a new career best with her performance.

Oakland senior Jonas Cantrell concluded a storied Horizon League career by winning the men’s 1650 free in 15:15.71. He won the race by more than 10 seconds, with Men’s Freshman of the Meet, Gunnar Seversen (Milwaukee) taking 2nd in 15:26.51.

Youngstown State’s Miriam Frass, the Women’s Swimmer of the Meet, kicked off Saturday night’s finals session by winning the women’s 1650 free in 16:40.80.

Oakland’s Elleana Chalifoux, the Women’s Diver of the Meet, earned the win on women’s 3-meter, ending with a score of 317.00.

Oakland senior Jordyn Shipps won the women’s 200 fly in 1:58.56, touching first by 3 seconds. Coincidentally, Shipps tied her career best with the performance.

Cleveland State’s Giovanna Cappabianca t0ok the women’s 200 breast in 2:15.19. She narrowly beat out Youngstown State senior Oliwia Kaniak, who came in 2nd with a 2:15.76. Kaniak got out to a fast start, splitting 1:03.79 on the opening 100, which was well ahead of Cappabianca’s 1:05.15.
