The 2015 Missouri Valley Long Course Championships are underway in Lawrence, Kansas, which means local swim powerhouse Michael Andrew is in the pool ready for action.
Andrew was entered in just one event at the meet, the men’s 100m butterfly, but the 16-year old certainly made the most of it. Scoring a 53.93 in prelims to snag the top seed-time, Andrew dipped under the 54-threshold for the first time as a 16-year old, having already accomplished the feat five times at age 15.
Andrew’s best time coming into this championships was the 53.46 he registered at last year’s Summer Junior Nationals. Tonight, however, he took it up yet another gear, clocking a sub-53 mark for the first time in his young career. Andrew touched the wall in 52.82 tonight to nab top prize, but also to destroy his previous best by over six tenths. His 52.82 mark inches Andrew to now sit just seven hundredths of a second off of the men’s 15-16 National Age Group (NAG) record of 52.75, held by Justin Lynch since 2013.
Additional winners in tonight’s session at the 2015 Missouri Valley LC Championships include Bryce Hinde in the women’s 100m breaststroke (1:14.43), Hannah Angell in the women’s 100m butterfly (1:04.63) and Aidan Holbrook in the men’s 200m freestyle (1:59.90).
