50 Yard Freestyle – Prelims
- NCAA Record: 19.38 3/21/2012 Zach Turk, Kenyon
Defending champion Oliver Smith of Emory took down the NCAA Division III record in the 50 free that had eluded him last year, going 19.37 to win the final heat on Wednesday morning. Smith erased a 2012 mark of 19.38 set by Zach Turk of Kenyon.
Smith has won the 50 free title at the last two NCAA Division III Championships. He notched a 19.55 in both 2017 and 2016. Prior to this morning, those were his top performances. Smith’s lifetime bests are:
- 19.37 – 3/21/2018
- 19.55 – 3/14/2017
- 19.55 – 3/15/2016
- 19.60 – 11/29/2017
- 19.67 – 11/30/2016
- 19.71 – 11/29/2017
- 19.73 – 3/15/2016
- 19.85 – 3/14/2017
- 19.91 – 11/30/2016
- 19.92 – 12/2/2015
Smith has another chance to lower his record in tonight’s final. He will also anchor the Emory 4×50 medley relay.
