Brian Benzing Finishes 2nd At NCAAs in 100 Breast, Highest Mid-Major Finish Since Dean Farris

  • U.S. Open Record: 49.69 — Ian Finnerty, Indiana (2018)
  • Pool Record: 50.52 — Liam Bell, California (2024)
  • 2023 Champion: 50.00 – Max McHugh, Minnesota

Top 8:

  1. Liam Bell (CAL) – 49.53 *NCAA, Meet, American, U.S. Open, & Pool Record*
  2. Brian Benzing (TOWS) – 50.59
  3. Denis Petrashov (LOU) – 50.91

  6. Josh Matheny (IU) – 51.07
  7. Julian Smith (FLOR) – 51.18
  8. Ron Polonsky (STAN) – 51.25

Towson’s Brian Benzing finished 2nd in the men’s 100 breaststroke at the 2024 NCAA Championships as he swam a 50.59 in the A final.

Benzing now is the highest men’s mid-major finisher at NCAAs since Harvard’s Dean Farris won the 100 free and 100 back at 2019 NCAAs. Matt Fallon of Penn finished 3rd in the 200 breast at 2022 NCAAs.

Benzing improves upon his own fastest mid-major in the event ever as he previously held the fastest time with a 51.25 that he swam at the 2023 CAA Championships. This morning, Benzing improved upon his leading mid-major time swimming a 50.92 and was even faster tonight. He also is the only mid-major swimmer to ever swim under the 51-second mark.

All-Time Mid-Major Men’s 100 Breaststroke

RANK SWIMMER SCHOOL TIME SEASON
1 Brian Benzing Towson 50.59 2023-24
2 Ilya Evdokimov Cornell 51.32 2017-18
3 Matt Fallon Penn 51.45 2021-22
4 Jack Kelly Brown 51.58 2023-24
5 Kohen Rankin Army 51.62 2023-24

Benzing only finished behind Cal’s Liam Bell tonight as Bell swam a 49.53 setting new NCAA and American records in the process. Benzing has already announced that he will use his COVID-19 5th year of eligibility as he will transfer to Indiana. He will be able to train alongside Josh Matheny who finished 6th in the event tonight.

Tonight was the first time Benzing made an NCAA ‘A’ final as he made the B final the last two years in the 100 breast.

That’s all great, but what about the mid major swimmers who get overlooked and don’t get invited to swim at NCAA’s. A perfect example is Dylan Felt from Davidson College. He had faster seed times than qu8te a few who were invited in the 500 free and 1650. Why wasn’t he invited ???????

Would need to know which specific swimmers you are referencing to be sure, but I would imagine here’s what happened:

Swimmers need to be roughly in the top 30 of one event in order to get an invite, but once they have that invite, then can swim another two events in which they were not under the invite time (i.e., not in the 30), as long as they have a NCAA ‘B’ cut.

So, Felt’s freestyle times of 1:33.8/4:16.58/14:55.89 are great for a mid-major swimmer, but short of what it took to get an invite in any of those events (1:32.92/4:14.90/14:54.92).

But if a swimmer who qualified with a 4:14.50 500 free time also had a 1:34.5 200 free time,… Read more »

This comment doesn’t deserve downvotes. Objectively He should been been DQd on all 4 walls. Downvote if you didn’t watch the race.

Maybe but every single person they’ve shown underwater pullout footage of also should be dq’d then. this meet the swimmers don’t seem to be hiding it, they’re all doing two pretty pronounced kicks.

Most breaststrokers today have a slight downward movement with their feet when they do their pull down while they’re adjusting their body position, are they all “kicks”? I don’t know. Benzing’s last night were pretty blatant, though. You could see full body undulation not just a little twitch of his legs.

You can’t get too mad at him, if he never gets called there’s technically nothing wrong with it. It’s frustrating though that the officiating at this level is so inconsistent where if you have this at US Nats or Olympics they review every race underwater and will call them out every time but at NCAAs you can see quite a few men and women get away with extra… Read more »

I saw others that should have been DQd. But what does that have to do with him?

He clearly cleaned it up for two breast this morning, so that’s good.

It’s not just the extra kick on his pullouts, he’s got some movement on his feet after each BR stroke ala Lilly King. Wish they would initiate DQs underwater here like they do at USAS national level meets.

It was placed in the rules prior to this season for this year, but the NCAA chose not to actually go through with it….

Let him celebrate

Ties the school record for highest NCAA finish with Meredith Budner Plack who was 2nd in 2022 in both the 500 and 1650, lost to Allison Schmitt in both.
