Ball State Men Top Valparaiso 155-99 In Regular Season Finale

VALPARAISO, Ind. – – The Ball State men’s swimming team closed its regular season by defeating Valparaiso 155-99 Friday night (Feb. 3). The Cardinals (3-3) came away with 11 victories at the Valparaiso Aquatic Center.

Leading the way for the Ball State was senior Noah Berryman coming away with a pair of event wins in the 100 (1:00.32) and 200 (2:14.09) breaststroke.

In addition to sweeping the breaststroke the Cardinals claimed all five freestyle victories; 50 free – Jack Wolfred (21.21), 100 free – Mason Young (47.53), 200 free – Owen Chaye (1:43.74), 500 free – Ethan Pheifer (4:52.62), 1000 free – Zachary Moody (10:00.76).

Rounding out Ball States individual event winners were Joey Garberick in the 100 backstroke (50.22), Logan Ayres in the 200 backstroke (1:57.23), and Michael Mitsynskyy in the 200 butterfly (1:57.94).

Ball State also started out the meet with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 medley relay led by the quartet of Chaye, Michael Burns, Mitsynskyy, and Jacob Siewers (1:35.20).

The Ball State men’s diving program will be back in action next weekend (Feb. 10-11) when it travels to the Miami Classic. The rest of Cardinals return to the pool at the MAC Championships hosted by Miami on March 1-4.

The Valpo men’s swimming team capped off regular season competition on Friday evening at the Valparaiso Aquatic Center, facing off with Ball State in dual meet action.

How It Happened

  • Five different Beacons posted second-place finishes in individual events on Friday, all of them coming from underclassmen. Sophomore Brendan Stangeland (West Fargo, N.D./Sheyenne) came home second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.44, while classmate Andrew Berzai (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian) touched the wall in the 200 breast in 2:14.12 for his runner-up finish.
  • Freshman Jackson Oostman (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) led Valpo in three events, one of which was his second-place finish in the 400 IM (4:18.94). Freshman Matthew Mantz (Spokane, Wash./Mead) completed the 200 fly in 1:59.84 to finish in second and fellow rookie Ricky Helmboldt (Tucson, Ariz./Arizona Connections Academy) covered the 500 free in 4:54.22 to place second.
  • Two Valpo swimmers had third-place individual finishes as well. Freshman Dathan Wolf (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East) led Valpo in the 100 back with a time of 54.58 to finish third, while freshman Anthony Martin (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) came home third in the 100 free with a time of 48.81.
  • The visiting Cardinals won the team scoring, 155-99.

Next Up

Valpo has just under a month to prepare for the Mid-American Conference Championships. The four-day conference championship meet begins Wednesday, March 1 in Oxford, Ohio.
