Hubi Kos put on a show for the Hungarian fans in the Duna arena on the final day of the 2024 Short Course World Champs in Budapest. Not only did he give them a dominant win in the 200 back on his home soil, but he registered the #2 performance of all-time in the event, coming within .02 of Mitch Larkin’s world record.
I watched Hubi Kos develop into a world class backstroker through the last two years at dual meets at ASU. At first his turns were typical European trained swimmer bad. Over the last two years they have greatly improved. Since he is still swimming SCYs in Texas under Bob Bowman they will get even better and faster. I would expect Hubi to break the SCM record in the next year.
Why do I have a feeling Lasco is going to show up unshaved and drop a 1:38 at ACCs… then proceed to throw down the gauntlet with a 1:34 and take the title from Hubi again 💀
This was actually my best swim of the meet even though it wasn’t a WR. (Crooks and Ponti deserved the swimswam award). That 2015 swim from Mitch was WAY faster than the 200 fly WR ( I know backstroke turns help) and was nearly unbelievable. I didn’t think Kos would get so close for a while yet. Larkin in 2015 was unstoppable.
It was probably the most surprising swim. Going into the meet, I thought we would maybe see him break 1:47 by a little.
The splits suggest he could break it but I expect it will be a long time until he swims SCM in top form again.
The splits were horrendous. If you can finish like that it means you swam it totally wrong. Gretchen and Summer have the correct approach. Destroy the early pace to such degree that you put away the field early and have tons of margin for error above the world record. When Marchand finally gets the 200 medley record it will be the same thing, going much further beneath the 1:54 pace than he’s managed to date.
I wonder if Mitch watched this race live lol
