Roberto Bonilla has announced he will transfer to SMU for the upcoming 2026-2027 season. Bonilla spent the last three seasons at Texas A&M.

Bonilla is originally from The Woodlands, Texas and represents Guatemala at the international level. Back in August 2025, he swam to wins in the long course meters 200 IM (2:00.89) and 200 breast (2:12.60) at the 2025 Junior Pan Am Games. Both times marked Guatemalan records. He also holds the national record in the LCM 100 breast with a 1:02.70.
Bonilla returned to Texas A&M for his junior season this fall and saw his season best of a 1:54.82 200 breast come in October at the USC Invite. He swam a lifetime best 53.73 during the team’s dual meet against SMU. He was 25th in the 200 breast (1:56.76), 32nd in the 200 IM (1:49.28), and 35th in the 100 breast (54.50) at the 2026 SEC Championships.

- 100 breast: 53.73 (October 2025 Texas A&M vs SMU dual)
- 200 breast: 1:54.75 (2025 SEC Championships)
- 200 IM: 1:46.83 (high school)
The SMU men finished 10th out of 15 teams at the 2026 ACC Championships with 407 points, finishing 81 points behind 9th place Notre Dame. SMU was led by diver Luke Sitz who scored 59 individual points. Francis Brennan led the team in the pool with 40 points including a 7th place finish in the 200 free.
Based on his best times, Bonilla would have been on the border of the ‘B’ and ‘C’ finals of the 200 breast at 2026 ACCs. SMU scored 3 points in the event as Kristaps Mikelsons was 22nd in a 1:55.45. It took a 52.95 100 breast and a 1:44.99 in the 200 IM to earn a 2nd swim. Mikelsons was the top finisher for SMU in the 100 breast with a 52.38 for 19th. Mikelsons will also be a senior this fall so the two will have the chance to train together for one season.
