Smith and Kisil Win Two Events Each on the First Night of Mel Zajac Jr

Canadian Olympic team members Kierra Smith and Yuri Kisil both picked up two wins on the first night of competition at the Mel Zajac Jr. International.

Smith took the women’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:08.84 beating fellow Olympic team member Martha McCabe by just over a second and a half. McCabe hit the wall in a time of 1:10.42. Later in the evening Smith went on to win the women’s 400 IM in dominating fashion touching the wall first in a time of 4:51.94 over five seconds ahead of Hillary Metcalfe who finished in a time of 4:57.33.

Kisil won the men’s 200 freestyle in a time of 1:51.90 beating UBC teammate Carson Olafson who touched in a time of 1:53.00. Kisil’s second gold of the evening did not come so easy. He took the men’s 50 butterfly in a time of 25.74 three one-hundredths of a second ahead of Nicolaas Dekker and four one-hundredths of a second ahead of Evan Carlson. Dekker finished in a time of 25.77 followed by Carlson who hit the wall in a time of 25.78.

Smith and Kisil were not the only Olympic team members in action on Friday night. Richard Weinberger, who won Olympic bronze in the 10km, picked up the win in the men’s 800 freestyle posting a time of 8:21.12 while Markus Thormeyer won the men’s 200 backstroke in a time of 2:03.19.

Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson just missed standing atop of the podium finishing second to Keaton Blovad in the women’s 200 backstroke. Blovad took the event in a time of 2:14.36 followed by Seltenreich-Hodgson who touched the wall in a time of 2:14.40.
