We are now in the thick of the 2019 World Junior Championships, and to make sure you’re up to speed with all the action, we’re giving you a video recap of what we think of the racing. This is Pancake Hot Take, where we rate the overall racing of every Finals Session on a scale of 1-5 pancakes, and give you our highlights from each night.

On the last 2 days of racing, we saw some great swims, with world junior records going down on both days. For that, I give the last 2 days…

4 PANCAKES

Let’s get into it.

  • Race of the Day: 1500 on both days. For day 5, Lani Pallister continued her dominance in the distance freestyle, dipping under 16 minutes to touch at 15:58.86 for a new championship record. On day 6, we saw Franko Grgic at it again, smashing Mack Horton’s world junior record and dropping a 14:46.09, putting himself at #6 in the world.
  • Surprise of the Day: On day 5, I don’t think anyone saw Apostolos Papastamos coming in the 400 IM. He nabbed a world junior record of his own, lowering it considerably to 4:11.93. On day 6, Erika Fairweather broke Lani Pallister‘s freestyle streak, touching for 1st in the 200 free at 1:57.96, making her #2 all-time in the New Zealand rankings.
  • Syrup on Top: USA dominates the medal table, finishing with 18 gold and 37 total medals.
