2018 WOMEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
With the 2018 Women’s NCAA championships wrapping up last night, we can now take a more in depth look at swimmers’ performance. The first step is examining who scored the points for each team. Who put up the big times. I compiled a team by team look at swimmer’s and diver’s performances at the meet this weekend. It’s a lot of data. Teams are sorted by their finishing order. Teams that scored no points are then added in no particular order at the end.
The times below are final times. If a swimmer participated in finals, their finals time is listed. If they only swam prelims, the prelims time is listed. Every team and swimmer at the meet is included.
Ella Eastin the swimmer of the year , led all scorers with 60 points. Her teammates Katie Ledecky Simone Manuel Kathleen Baker

Was it really a team competition?
Like a team competition in skating or cycling were the last member of the team determines team’s time NCAA team competition should apply some sort of averaging procedure that will involve results of all members of the team. At least the best coach should be determined this way. Otherwise it becomes the competition of best recruiters.
Stanford wins even without ANY of Ledecky, Manuel, AND Eastin’s individual points. If that’s not a team effort I don’t know what is. Look beneath the surface- Stanford had a lot of swimmers step up at NCAAs even if that doesn’t fit your narrative.
It is very hypothetical discussion and I don’t know how you will count Stanford’s points should you take Stanford’s leading trio completely off the picture or if you replace them with someone of an average level. They will be 173 points down in individual races and relay will be less successful. Plus you probably don’t count that the points of Eastin – Ledecky – Manuel will go to competing teams increasing their total score.
There is no reason to argue.
What if the college recruiting process looks like professional league’s draft. Or there was some kind of cap that restricts powerful schools to take advantage in recruiting process. Will it make team competition more exciting and fair. I… Read more »
Well if you move the competing individuals up in the individual races- the result, Stanford winning, stays the same (since it’s only Cal that really matters for this analysis). That holds true if you just take them out altogether.
For the meta argument- having a draft would be a pretty bad deal for swimmers. Imagine not being able to choose a college just because you are an athlete. That would be pretty terrible and not well received. Even if fans see more parity, we have to remember there is the college aspect to this too for the athletes themselves.

I agree that not all college swimmers go pro and there is some group of swimmers who swims only to pay for the education. But don’t you think there is something artificial in this “best team”, “best. coach” competition. It is not like old time competition between colleges where sport wasn’t even secondary but mostly recreational activity. High school competition is fairer. Probably because of this recruiting process the college sport is not exactly amateur one but at the same time it is not a professional league neither.
